Wicked (2019) #1

Welcome to the 1st Wicked: The Movie Fan Appreciation Thread!

This thread is for the fans of Wicked: The Musical who are excited about the prospect of a feature-length film being made in the (hopefully) not-so-distant future. The movie will be based on the stage production written by Winnie Holzman who wrote the book based on Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Just so you know, the movie has not been set in stone, which means it may be quite a while before we actually see it on the big screen. However, it is a definite maybe. There has been much buzz about it possibly being made when the time is 'right'.

'Wicked' Movie on the Way?

Langley tells Variety, "Our goal now is absolutely to make the Wicked film, but... Marc and Stephen Schwartz are very mindful of the right timing. But we're dying to do it."

Wicked Becomes A Movie

It’s somewhat surprising that this hasn’t happened before now. Variety reports that a movie is finally being made out of the Broadway musical Wicked.
...

The movie version is being shepherded along over at Universal by producer Marc Platt. Platt had a hand in making Wanted happen, and he’s already working on Wanted 2. The Wicked stage version is a monster hit, ten years from now it’ll probably be regarded as the new Phantom of the Opera. So he’ll almost certainly have no trouble getting people to see it.

Wicked Heading To The Big Screen

Universal Pictures production president Donna Langley has revealed that the movie company is in negotiations to make a big screen version of the hit musical ‘Wicked’.

“Our goal now is absolutely to make the ‘Wicked’ film,” Langley tells Variety. “But much like Judy Craymer wouldn’t give up screen rights to ‘Mamma Mia!’ until the stage show had reached its pinnacle, Marc and Stephen Schwartz are very mindful of the right timing. But we’re dying to do it.”

Marc Platt, who recently extended his contract with Universal Pictures for five years, is set to make the movie version saying he is in “early movie talks” with the studio.

The screenplay will be written by Winnie Holzman, who wrote the book for the stage production of Wicked, however, no casting decisions had been made.

'WICKED' ON TRACK FOR FILM ADAPTATION
...

Platt and WICKED co-producer David Stone are currently in early talks with Universal Pictures to make the movie happen. There is no news of casting yet, but Broadway originators Kristin Chenoweth (PUSHING DAISIES) and Idina Menzel (ENCHANTED, film and stage versions of RENT), having proved their screen appeal, would be prime choices.

I know! This is very cool! The movie is going to take a few years because like it's quoted in the OP, they want to get it just right!

Good news is, they're actually working on it!

Thanks for the thread, Katherine. The OP is beautiful and all the information is so useful!

yeah it's still years away.

I'm a little worried though. I just don't know how they will be able to make Defying Gravity powerful enough on the screen.

Hope it's not a huge mess of a film.

But also exciting is the talk of Wanted 2!

I've heard a lot of people say that it'd be better to make a movie out of the book, which I sort of agree with.

Of course, I might also be slightly biased because I love the book.

Thanks! I'm excited, too. I haven't read the book so I wouldn't know which one would make a better movie -- the stage production or the book. But I loved Phantom of the Opera (musical) and I thought they did an EXCELLENT job of turning it into a movie. The special effects were gorgeous!

I think with what Hollywood is capable of creating/re-creating these days, the "Defying Gravity" segment will not be a letdown!!
