Shutter Island (2010)

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

I loved the mystery of the story and the final reveal as to who Teddy was.

+ What did you like least about the film? Why?

There wasn't anything I didn't like, I loved the dialogue and progression of events.

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Leo DiCaprio as Teddy, he was really good at convincing us he was really a Marshall and not well.

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

Max Von Sydow's character, the 'German' doctor who thought he could outwit him but sticking him with needle. :Nono:

+ Comments:

Overall it was a fantastic re-watch and the ending is so sad when we realize that Teddy knows what he's doing by agreeing to the operation by pretending to still be sick.

+ What would you rate this movie out of 5 stars?

Prometheus (2012)

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

I loved the cast for this one, including Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Logan Marshall-Green.

Plus I loved to hate David!

+ What did you like least about the film? Why?

I didn't like how Weyland had been on the ship the whole time but what else would you expect from a Trillionaire! Guy Pearce was fantastic in that role with the prosthetics and make up!

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

I loved Noomie Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw, she was heroine of the film.

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

I hated Weyland's conceited attitude in regards to trying to 'live forever'. I know David was an antagonist but at the same time I loved the character for being so bad.

+ Comments:

I know there are rumours of another film to follow this one so I hope we get it!

The Princess Bride (1987)

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

how the movie is a story within a story with the grandpa telling it to the sick kid

Westley as a character

my favorite parts are the beginning with the “As you wish” quote and Westley facing Inigo, Fezzik, and Vizzini

also like the scene with Westley and Buttercup before he rolls down the hill

+ What did you like least about the film? Why?

nothing really

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Westley

how could I not?

I mean he’s so attractive

even more so with the mask

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

Prince Humperdinck because I don’t find anything likeable about him

+ Comments: this is a childhood favorite for me but it was definitely interesting to re-watch this movie for the first time since I finished the book for the first time recently

^ Great to see you here, Allison! May is free reign month, so for the weekend of 25-26 May, I'm reviewing:

CALAMITY JANE

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

The chemistry between Howard Keel and Doris Day and Day's beautiful singing voice. They work in perfect harmony together. Plus, she plays an excellent tomboy

+ What did you like least about the film? Why?

The infamous secondary couple Katie and Danny. Just two very bland and unlikable people and their connection is so much more shallow than Calamity and Bill's. Thankfully, it takes a back seat to Day and Keel's scenes.

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Calamity Jane, she's just so strong and with so much heart. Everyone in the movie underestimates her loyalty and leadership, until her heart-to-heart with Bill encourages her to open up more.

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

DANNY I could rant for so long about how cowardly, mean and selfish he is. Calamity harbors feelings for him, and other than his good looks, it's hard to explain why. The awful way he treats her when Katie disappears speaks volumes about how she makes the right choice in Bill, and thankfully, Calamity acknowledges this, too.

+ Comments:

Amazing movie, romantic and fun to sing along with. Doris Day, you are greatly missed.

+ What would you rate this movie out of 5 stars?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (2011)

I know it’s Monday now but it’s a long weekend here and I split up watching this movie into staying up 2 nights so some of it 2 nights ago and the rest last night

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

favorite parts definitely have to be Snape’s memories and the revelation that he still loves Lily after all this time even if they are heartbreaking to watch and make me cry my eyes out (the added scene where Snape is holding and crying over Lily's dead body really shows his grief over her loss well)

and Ron and Hermione’s first kiss in the chamber of secrets after destroying the horocrux

and Neville’s speech

and the epilogue does a wonderful job of wrapping up the series as we said goodbye to the golden trio almost 8 years ago (emotions as we all said goodbye to our childhoods)

+ What did you like least about the film? Why?

I guess the battle sequences could’ve been cut down a bit

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

don’t really have a favorite character in this movie in particular but Alan as Snape definitely gives the best performance

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

nothing really here either

I guess Voldemort b/c he’s pretty much completely evil/unforgiving by this point

+ Comments:

I hadn’t re-watched the full movie in 4 and a half years so it was great to re-visit

I liked it more this time

hard to believe I saw it for the first time in theaters almost 8 years ago

+ What would you rate this movie out of 5 stars?

COMEDY/ADVENTURE ~ "BILL"

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

The chemistry between the cast was just as good as it always had been during the "Horrible Histories" TV series. A slightly different tone to the show, but just as good.

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Mathew Baynton was so impressive, as usual, as Bill Shakespeare. He is so charismatic and intelligent; the perfect combination to play an iconic name.

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

Perhaps his wife? But only because she was there at various times to lecture him and wasn't quite as funny as the others. I didn't dislike her.

+ Comments:

An intelligent and worthwhile British comedy

THRILLER ~ "Searching"

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

The use of social media on screen, very similar to the movie Unfriended, really works in this case and allows the audience to follow this journey with John Cho's character as he desperately searching for online clues as to the whereabouts of his daughter.

Also, the resolution was unexpected, which was a pleasant surprise. Didn't feel cliche.

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Margot Kim, I think. Even though we don't really get to know her personally (she is largely absent in a physical sense), she is constantly talked about and being looked for and we discover a lot about her via her father and his efforts to learn more about her.

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

The Detective (Vick) a prime example of why nobody should take a person's word at face value. Don't be led astray by one person who claims to be something and is suspiciously taking an invested interest in your life and your family all of a sudden. (I keep using negative emojis, but she's actually an interesting character )

+ Comments:

When the message notifications kept popping up on the screen, I thought this would be another cliche social media-driven movie, but the technology is actually used for a solid reason and works well in conjunction with the father's desperate search. I would honestly re-watch this, and I didn't expect to be saying that. Best compliment I can give it

Kung Fu Panda (2008)

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

this is definitely my favorite scene in the movie

it’s heartbreaking to watch

+ What did you like least about the film? Why?

nothing really

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Tigress is my favorite member of the Furious Five and I like Tai Lung as a villain

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

don’t really have one but my least favorite member of the Furious Five is Crane

+ Comments:

I hadn’t re-watched the full movie in years so it was great to re-visit and it’s really one of the best most beautifully animated new era DreamWorks cartoons

still entertaining to watch with a great story and compelling characters

I was reminded of The Karate Kid during the training montage

and Po reminded me of Hurley from Lost

I really like the voice cast in this movie and lowkey forgot that Seth Rogen and Jackie Chan were in this movie (I like how there’s plenty of Asian representation with the cast)

ROMANCE ~ "Crazy Rich Asians"

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

It was very pretty to look at. Bright, shiny, captivating scenes involving beautiful mansions.

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Probably Astrid, who just felt like the most relatable character and doing her best in a bad situation. When she confronts her husband, I was like, "good for you!"

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

Nick and Charlie. The two leading men were just devoid of any real emotion. Don't know whether it was more the performances or characters at fault, but I had no pull towards either one of them.

+ Comments:

The film does what it can to show a feminist ideal of how a woman comes to realize that she should put her own destiny above the life she thought she could live with a man whose family are above her station. I felt sorry for Michelle Yeoh for having to play such a nasty cliche of a person, being the over-protective parent who interferes in her son's love life for the sake of preserving the family name - basically The Notebook if you swap genders and I'm sorry but most of the performances felt flat to me. It's classified as a comedy, but those moments are so over the top and the character of Rachel so dull that I really couldn't get into any of it.

Lemonade Mouth (2011)

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

I like the story, the characters, and the music

it’s kind of breakfast club meets battle of the bands

the messages about the importance of friendship and standing up for what you believe in are great

+ What did you like least about the film? Why?

nothing really

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Stella and Mo are my favorites

I like how Stella questions authority and stands up for what she believes in

and I like Mo for her character growth/story arc/discovering who she is as a person

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

I don’t really like Mo’s boyfriend

Spoiler:

+ Comments: one of Disney Channel’s best movies that I would recommend (I actually find it underrated)

I also read the book and it was really good

THRILLER ~ "The Wrong Friend"

+ What did you like best about the movie? Why?

The twist was something I did NOT see coming The movie seemed so cliche for about 85% of the time but the stand-off between the "father and son" made up for the rest

+ Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Ironically it turned out to be the villain himself (the "son"), who was not all he seemed and managed to be one step ahead of everyone. Wish he had a less predictable end

+ Who was your least favorite character in the film? Why?

Vivica A. Fox's character, who lacks faith in her husband way too easily and trusts his "son" way too easily. By the time she discovers the truth, I had zero sympathy for her

+ Comments:

+ The main guy looked like Ansel Elgort
+ He became the most interesting and almost sympathetic character in the movie, which I did not expect
+ The parents' marriage was beyond weird, just zero trust there

+ What would you rate this movie out of 5 stars?
