School of Rock (2003) #1: It's a long way to the top (If you wanna Rock n Roll)

School of Rock Appreciation Thread

Let us begin:

This movie is about Dewey who is a rock guitarist that is not 'very good' at his job. His over eager and complete exaggeration of his ability to play coupled with a lot of stunts cause him to be kicked out of his band. In revenge he sets out to prove how much better he is by putting together his own band and winning 'The Battle of the Bands'.

Along the way, Dewey encounters minor problems with his roommates who are tired of his freeloading and inability to pay rent. His roommates, a timid best friend and his loud obnoxious girlfriend, tell him to pay rent or get out.

Desperate for work he deceitfully takes a substitute position at Horace Green Elementary School, posing as his roommate Ned. With Principal Mullins watching him like a hawk, Dewey discovers that among his Gr.5 students are a group of able musicians which he wrangles together to secretly form a band which practices throughout the school day. Lying to his students about the band being a secret project, this mix of kids that range from preppy to rebellious hide their studies from everyone.

As Dewey teaches these 'classical' kids about Rock 'n Roll, he forms a bond with them, growing to love them and learn in turn about himself and what is right and wrong.

In the end he manages to boost the kids confidence about themselves, help them discover a different love of music, and put together a rocking band.

Jack Black is Dewey Finn in this movie. The other characters in this amazingly funny and clean movie are: Zach, lead guitarist (played by Joey Gaydos), Summer, band manager (Miranda Cosgrove), Freddy, drummer (Kevin Alexander Clark), Katie, bass guitarist (Rebecca Brown III), Lawrence, keyboardist (Robert Tsai), Tomika, backup singer (Maryam Hussan), Marta, backup singer (Caitlin Hale), Alicia, backup singer (Aleisha Allen), and Michelle, the groupie (Jordan-Claire Green) - these are the members of the rock band. As well in the cast, Principal Mullins (Joan Cusack), Ned Schneebly (Mike White), and Patty, Ned's girlfriend (Sarah Silverman).

This movie has great music, fun storyline, and talented musicians and actors.

I hope everyone will enjoy this thread and join together with me in cheering on SoR!

Didn't you just the kids?

my when I saw how amazing the kids were...

I when Zach's (keyboard) hair was so spiky That was *some* look

I think it would be fun to have a sequel to this movie...not necessarily the same thing...maybe they are preparing for a tour or another battle of the bands...

I would love to see these kids play together again.

HI ya!

My sister and I loved this movie so much...not only b/c of Jack Black who is pretty much always funny but the interaction and chemistry of the kids in the movie...I loved listening to the kids' commentary on the DVD as well as the footage of the kids at the Toronto International Film Festival, my hometown! My sis and I have become instant shippers of Katie (the bass player) and Freddy (the drummer)... they are also so cute in real life (totally Kevin clark and Rebecca Brown are my favourite kids).

I like the idea of a sequel but I think that it would work well as a tv show, concentrating on the kids and how they have a rock band. Freddy is definitely the leader of the group and I love how everybody seems to protect Lawrence (that's actually the keyboardist while Zach is lead guitar). Summer would be the cool manager and then and don't forget the cute groupies...what do you guys think?

I love Jack Black - I don't care how stupid this film is, I want to see it.

Besides, I actually liked Orange County and thought it deserved more respect.

I knew that... Funny how I know the real name but not the fake name

Me too loulou That's exactly what I thought when I saw Freddy and Becca Squee!

I'm such a shipper addict. Even in movies where there really is no romance, I find *something*

I agree on the whole tv show thing. I want *more* of these kids. They had such a great chemistry I would go to the sequel just to see the kids perform They rock my world!

Jo: Hey...you came here too!

I agree with you heaps about this movie. i love Katie the bass player and freddy the drum player in this movie. My friends and I are totally shipping for them to be a couple.
I like your idea of the tv show. This would make me ship for katie and freddy even more
do you think jack black would sign on to do a tv show like this?

brasha 03-13-2004 10:50 AM

I just watched it for the first time last night with my hubby and kids. Everyone loved it. It was funny as all heck.

I didn't exactly feel bad for him when he was busted because as a parent I can feel for the parent characters being mad that just anyone could come into the classroom and teach whatever they wanted. Or when he took them on the "field trip" without anyone knowing . That got my parent juices flowing, but all in all it was a great movie.

Those are some talented kids, and it was nice to see Jack interact so well with them. Two thumbs up

My family and I watched this movie last night and suprisingly, my dad LOVED this movie. He thought it was really funny, especially Jack Black.

It was so cute.

Yay! More SoR fans!

I thought Freddy was such a cutie If only I wasn't like 10 years older than him

ETA: Make that twelve He's 14.

Also, check out the new intro and link I found.

If anyone finds any good sites or places with screen caps of the movie please let me know!

I rented this movie this weekend, it is so hilarious, I'm going to go buy the DVD.

The kids were great and the chemistry between them were even greater.

I'd like to see a sequel or TV show too.

Funniest line in the movie:

"Your kids have all really touched me, and I'm pretty sure that I've touched them."
