Bringing my post over from the Soundtrack thread:

Every time I watch THE RING, I have a newfound appreciation for the suspenseful score by Hans Zimmer and how, particularly near the end when Noah dies, you feel so much more creeped out and terrified upon hearing the music accompany the story of Samara

Also, the scene near the beginning when Aiden envisions Katie running up the stairs: listen carefully and you'll hear music / sound effects similar to those used in the Japanese horror DARK WATER

Re-watched it last night and something occurred to me:

If Katie watched the tape (which she did), and suffered all the symptoms (again, she did), then how come she's so nonchalant when chilling with Becca in her room?

Is she supposed to be trying to kid herself that everything will be okay? Or has the tape sent her mind crazy and repressed her from getting scared?

She's so back and forth with her emotions in terms of what she tells Becca about the tape that it's hard to tell if it's SUPPOSED to be cryptic, or if it was just poorly written.

Random thought about the 2002 movie --

Becca is still alive by the end. Institutionalized, but alive. AND she's getting visions (or at least when touched by someone who carries the curse.)

So... Why didn't any of the sequels make reference to her? It annoys me that she's just forgotten about. She might have even been useful.

Also, when she tells Rachel "she'll show you in four days" -- um did she already foresee that Rachel was going to live?

Uh there are so many loose ends with this franchise I love the first movie, but why present Becca as this useful conduit to Samara if they're never gonna show her again?

That's a great point. I don't get why they just abandoned and forgot about Becca either. She possibly saw what happened to Katie and seemed to know how much time Rachel had left. That was a huge missed opportunity and plot hole.

Absolutely it's one of my very few annoyances with the movie (and the sequels).

Plus, where the hell did she go when Katie called up the stairs to her? I wish there had been some flashback sequence revealing that. I always assumed Becca saw Samara and was just frightened into silence (and hid the bathroom or something). I guess she also saw Katie's body but again, it's left open to interpretation

Yeah, I hate how none of that is ever answered and it's ultimately left up in the air. They could of brought Becca back in that crappy "Rings" movie or something. Oh well.

The dismissive way Rachel speaks to Aidan's concerned teacher is so nasty, it reminds me of how Matilda's parents spoke to Miss Honey in that kids film of the Roald Dahl book

That smudged photograph of Katie and her friends will forever be one of the creepiest images in cinema

The images on the tape were compiled so well. I love the falling ladder representing the mother leaping from the cliff and the silence as the well is shown before the tape ends

Oh and here's Noah love the tension as his son walks by

I like how they did the Noah and Rachel relationship in the movie. They have the tension of exes who share a child, but they maintain a civility.

In the Japanese movie, they seemed much colder toward each other.

Oh and was it necessary to have the girl who works with Noah kiss him when she came in? It looked like a territorial thing to warn Rachel to keep her distance.

Rachel spends the majority of this movie talking down to people. First the teacher and her boss, now the worker at the video place

She's not a very likeable protagonist.

I always thought it was interesting how Rachel kept getting the symptoms even after Aidan watched her copy of the tape.

Really shows how evil and cunning Samara was.

That conversation between Noah and Aidan in the car sums up why I love this movie. It's a mystery film, so it makes time for quiet moments such as between a father and son bonding for the first time.

Rachel antagonizes a horse that just wanted to be left in peace but ended up as part of Samara's sick game and dead because of her.

Always disturbing to see and hear this innocent horse fall prey to the boat propellers
