Lust, Caution (2007) #1

My mom wants to watch this movie but I cant find anywhere where it is showing in the US. It tells me it came out on the 28th in limited theaters, but where can I find where or when its showing in Maryland?

I'm not sure because I read somewhere that Lee was going to edit the film (for ratings purposes) after previously saying he wouldn't, so I'm not sure if that will affect a release date. I'm not sure if one had been set for the US, though.

BTW, questions like this go here. However, I'll leave this open so people can discuss the movie when they see it. I'll edit the title to reflect this change.

hi..my advice to you to see if and when it will be playing in maryland is to go to
Movie Tickets & Theater Showtimes - Fandango
....on the wednesday morning prior to the 28th (or any wednesday morning..because that's when they update their site as to what's opening on friday)
put in your zipcode to narrow down the search...and select the friday's date you want... look for it to playing at an "art house" type of theater......

in los angeles...'lust caution' is opening at the landmark theater on october 5th....

in orange county where i live it's opening up at the westpark 8 in irvine on october 12th....

perchance are you a fan of tony leung?...he's really the only reason i want to see this film....i'm really not that much of a fan of ang lee.....i much prefer the films of wong kar wai.....but that's another story...

Same! I love Tony Leung, have been a fan ever since Infernal Affairs (the first). Haven't seen any Ang Lee movies actually, so I'm thinking of watching Lust, Caution. Apparently I can watch it because they snipped some of the sex scenes. I hate it when they snip things, it's always very jarring

from what i've read from various sources...the gist is this...quoted from an internet news item...

Quote:
An edited version of "Lust, Caution" with less sex and violence recently cleared Chinese censors. China doesn't have a ratings system, so Lee had to provide a version suitable for all ages.
the scenes in question.....

Quote:
Sources who have seen the film said it contains at least three scenes -- one a long montage -- featuring multiple acts of aggressive sexual activity in different positions. There's no full-frontal male nudity (the source of some NC-17 rulings when shown in sex scenes), but male-on-female oral sex, non-S&M restraints and several nontraditional sexual positions are depicted, conveying the aggression and emotional conflict between the main characters.
my thinking is that the film will be released in orange county with no editing, the way it was suppose to be viewed...in the "art house" theaters where i live....i've seen alot of movies that are "nr" (not rated)....which means they haven't been submitted to the movie ratings board or they haven't been edited per their "suggestions".....the bad thing is many people will be unable to see the film, because most theater chains won't run it because of that.....a good documentary to watch that explains the whole ratings system in the united states is 'this film is not yet rated'

Some article I got from here

Tang Wei and Tony Leung's love scenes in "Lust, Caution" push sexuality limits.

Tony Leung Chiu Wai's full nudity in movie, "Lust, Caution" 《色,戒》has become the hottest topic in Hong Kong entertainment lately. The film won the top Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, generated good word-of-mouth, and gained good box office results in Asia.

However, the public discussion could not stray away from the explicit love scenes between Tony Leung and female lead, Tang Wei. Director, Ang Lee, once said, "Lust is also a part of art."

So how does the public opinion perceive Tony Leung's nudity in the film? Was it a necessary part of the script? Or was it only demanded by Ang Lee to increase the media's attention? If the Director for "Lust, Caution" were Wong Jing instead, then would the film become pornographic?

The Hong Kong premiere of "Lust, Caution" was a star-studded event, including the attendance of Chow Yun Fat, Zhang Ziyi and other international stars. Chow Yun Fat gave the film a 99.9 score, while other guest viewers gave it a 100 score. Just watching Tony Leung and Tang Wei's passionate scenes were fulfilling enough!

Director, Ang Lee, noted that he originally thought of casting Zhang Ziyi as the female lead in "Lust, Caution." However, when Tang Wei, auditioned for the role, Ang Lee was attracted by her ordinary looks. He felt Tang Wei was very suitable for the role.

Apparently the whole world focused on Tony Leung's private parts or how intensely passionate his bed scenes were with Tang Wei. Many female movie viewers watched the movie to satisfy their curiosity about Tony's nudity. Perhaps this was also one way to sneak a peak at naked celebrity bodies?

"Lust, Caution" is a period spy thriller that takes place in World War II China. Was the film sexually gratuitous or artistic in nature? Over 50 people were polled and the following results were found:

* 44% of respondents said that Tony Leung's exposure of his private parts was a publicity tactic employed by the film company. They felt Tony's nudity was unnecessary.

* 38% of respondents felt that "Lust, Caution" warranted artistic merit. They felt that Tony's nudity was a suitable artistic sacrifice for the film.

* 28% of respondents did not find Tang Wei to be beautiful. But they found her to possess a unique air about her. Acting counted more than looks and audiences found her more suitable for the role rather than Zhang Ziyi.

*88% of respondents said that Director Wong Jing's movies were cheap and pornographic. However, Ang Lee's movies were artistic and his sex scenes were necessary for the film. Perhaps there is only a fine line between being cheap or artistic!

Ticket sales for "Lust, Caution" in Hong Kong have topped $3.66 million (HKD) since its opening earlier this week. The movie was shown at 60 theater screens and became the top-seller during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday week and broke a historical records as one of the strongest box office openings in September.

Box office sales have been equally strong in Taiwan. Since "Lust, Caution" opened on September 26th, box office sales have surpassed $8.75 million (HKD).

China blacklists Tang Wei

Chinese officials have blacklisted actress Tang Wei for her role in the erotic Ang Lee-directed spy thriller Lust, Caution.

A memo sent Friday by China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) to the country's media demanded they remove any works and commercials featuring Wei, according to broadcasting trade paper The Hollywood Reporter.

Lust, Caution — which captured a Venice film festival Golden Lion last May — features Tang as an undercover insurgent who becomes sexually entangled with a powerful collaborator during Japan's occupation of Shanghai in the 1940s in order to assassinate him.

"Beautifying Japanese collaborators sparked the controversy over Lust, Caution in China even more than the sex scenes did," said a report from the United Evening News in China.

Tang was named best new performer in December's Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards — considered the Chinese-language Oscars — for her performance in the film.

Chinese officials have previously criticized Lust, Caution for its "glorification of traitors and insulting to patriots."

SARFT allowed the film to be shown in China last year albeit with seven minutes of sex scenes removed.

Taiwan-born director Ang Lee, who won an Academy Award for directing 2005's Brokeback Mountain, has been spared blacklisting because he is an artistic adviser to the Beijing Olympics. Nevertheless, he was not pleased with the move.

"I am very disappointed that Tang Wei is being hurt by this decision," Lee said in a statement.

"She gave one of the greatest performances ever in a movie that was properly produced and distributed. We will do everything we can to support her in this difficult time."

SARFT's edict also excludes the actress from Chinese awards shows as well as the producers of the film. In addition, discussions about the film and Tang on web forums have been deleted, according to Hong Kong newspaper Oriental Daily.

The move comes just as the Asian Film Awards announced that Tang would be a presenter. It's not known whether the awards, set for March 17 in Hong Kong, will be affected by the decree.

Chinese authorities have been exercising stricter controls over film, media and the web over the past few years.

They have banned talent shows, cosmetic programs and any shows deemed to be overtly pornographic or sexual on television and radio.

Recently, they limited the broadcast of foreign cartoons on primetime television as well as anything that touches upon horror, crime and the supernatural in film.

~ Interesting that Tony Leung wasn't blacklisted even though he played the Japanese collaborator. I think her being a woman and a newbie has something to do with it.

The acting in this movie was so great, especially from Tony. But I thought the chemistry wasn't all there

But yeah...those sex scenes were something!

I have a love/hate thing with this movie. Wonderful sets, beautiful score by Alexandre Desplat, and actually a very intriguing storyline about spying and the web of deception the lead female finds herself in... But I feel this was all undermined in favor of attempts to shock viewers with the vivid, lengthy, explicit, OTT and rather awkward sex scenes.

(You're supposed to view them as love scenes by the end, but that's kind of difficult, given that Tony Leung's character really isn't as sympathetic as they want him to be, and Tang Wei's character was FORCED into seducing him through a false identity.)

The most surprising thing is how the movie ends; I wasn't expecting it, and it fit well with the serious tone of the rest of the story.

Her relationship with Wang Leehom's character had way more potential as a love story in my opinion (they are both pictured in the below image ), but unfortunately, it gets lost in the madness of her crazily toxic affair with Tony Leung's character.
