Coming-of-age Films #1: Because we can still relate to them

I just finished a good coming-of-age movie for the first time and noticed there wasn’t a thread for this genre so opening up one now

the movie that I watched was Eighth Grade and I liked it

personally middle school for me about 10 years ago now was a good time for me (I struggled more socially and academically in high school)

but I was still able to relate to the main character (being socially awkward)

definitely got some John Hughes vibes with how the pain of growing up was portrayed

the fact that this was the same actress who provided the voice for Agnes in Despicable Me 1 and 2 makes me feel old

and so did the discussion about social media use

I’m glad that social media wasn’t so prevalent when I was still in middle school

it’s definitely impressive/cool that this whole movie was filmed over the span of 12 years

and it’s seamless with how the years pass by

when Yellow by Coldplay (one of my favorite songs) started playing during the opening of the movie I was like oh yeah this was definitely filmed in the early 2000s

and Soak Up the Sun by Sheryl Crowe was definitely another favorite early 2000s song that played near the beginning
finished it last night

Matilda (based on Roald Dahl's novel) is such a brilliant portrayal of overcoming trauma and isolation at a young age
