| Documentaries I never really used to care about documentaries; always thought of them as boring National Geographic type movies with some old guy with a monotone voice as a narrartor. But recently I've seen some really good ones! I love that Netflix has a documentary section. One I just saw was Spellbound. It was the story of 8 kids from all different walks of life who made it to the National Spelling Bee. I was always in the school spelling bee as a kid, so I found it really interesting. I also saw one just this past week on Dateline called Deadline. It was about the death penalty, which is something I feel pretty strongly about and was a really interesting look at it. It focused a lot on the death penalty problems in Illinois, and being that I lived in Chicago fr 6 years that interested me a lot. Another one I liked was shown PBS a few years ago called Refrigerator Mothers. It was all about women who had autistic children in the 50's and some doctor claimed that autism was the result of being a cold, uncaring person, thus they were labeled as "Refrigerator Mothers." Very sad, but very interesting. Anyways I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for documentaries that they enjoyed. I think they're a great way to learn and see different points of view. | |||

| documentaries......um......your right....i too think that most people think that documentaries are boring and not worth the watch.....what a mistake......if they only knew.....i watch documentaries in a theater on a regular basis.....so far this year i've seen 6 or 7..........here's a few of my favorites from the last couple years.....i've seen many many more that i can share, if there's an interest...... my favorite this year is... 'metallica: some kind of monster'..... a much better documentary than the "wilco" documentary a few years ago....the personality clashes, the addiction troubles and subsequent recovery of their lead singer....all of the problems in making their new album.....undergoing therapy.....it actually shows the band in therapy with their therapist as they try to work out their inter-personal problems and to become a more creative force as a band....at one point they even talk to their therapist about not needing him any more and he argues the point that they do...(of course he's making 40,000 dollars a month working with them)......spellbinding.....not a dull moment in a film that's 2 hours and 20 minutes long....  'the fog of war: eleven lessons from the life of robert s. mcnamara'.....robert s. mcnamara was secretary of defense under presidents kennedy and johnson.....he was directly responsible for the build up of united states military forces in vietnam........imo essential veiwing given the current state of events in iraq...........  'capturing the friedmans'......a family starts to unwind on camera........a son and his father are accused of child molestation......filmed on video and super 8 by another son............ 'tupac: resurrection'.....tupac shakur tells his life story from the grave....very cool..... 'winged migration'.....(i originally saw this film in a theater, then on a dvd at work)......migratory birds in flight.....breathtaking.....be sure to watch the making of portion of the dvd......it's full of surprises.... 'lost in la mancha'.....a documentary about making a film.....everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.....  'rivers and tides: andy goldsworthy working with time'......a film about andy goldsworthy, an environmental artist.....creating temporary art from what nature has to offer.....beautiful.....  and why not....since i mentioned it......."wilco's" documentary......'i'm trying to break your heart'....once again a band tries to complete an album....sell that album to their record company.....all in the midst of personality conflicts within the band....filmed in glorious black and white....    | |||
