The Constant Gardener

I'm surprised I didn't find a thread for this movie...has anyone seen it? I thought it was excellent!

Quote:
When a British diplomat's wife -- a socially-conscious lawyer -- turns up dead in Kenya, he sets out to find the truth surrounding her murder. In the process, he finds out that his wife had been compiling data against a multinational drug company that uses helpless Africans as guinea pigs to test a tuberculosis remedy with unfortunately fatal side effects. Therefore those who may have had the most reason to silence her are closer to home than he ever imagined.
I loved the story! It doesn't go in chronological order the whole time, and normally I hate that (as in Memento, gave me a headache!), but this was very well done, you had to stay focued, but it doesn't get too confusing.

The author of the book used to work for MI6 (British Intelligence), so he probably knows more about how the real world works than even this movie posits.

This is a very good, adult film and will no doubt be up for Oscars (if it is allowed; it is technically a foreign film) for Ralph Finnes and possibly Rachel Wiez.

This was released to limited theaters and no fanfare here in the U.S., but not surprisingly considering most everything put out by mainstream Hollywood is aimed at teens and if they made more movies like this people would go back to the movies instead of just waiting for DVD.

I have this saved in my NetFlix queue - needless to say it looked like an engrossing story, well done, so I want to watch it.

Edited to add - if I had the time and the money I'd go back to the theater as I prefer the theater experience, but the fact is that I can't afford to go. Period. The prices are so outrageous - I can rent unlimited flms in one month for the cost of my grandmother and I to see one film, no snacks.

This is true...

And the flip-side is there aren't any really good adult (for people over 25+) movies like this to entice people back to the theaters either.

It is a one-two situation that Hollywood, specifically studio execs, need to get through their heads: Release good stories that have more than just explosions and CGI and people will respond to them. I say this not as a movie "snob" since I like all kinds of films, but because I tend favor more intelligent movies like "Crash" to something like "The Island" these days simply because the target audience for such projects is where I currently fall in terms of demographics and the mindless action-flick/slasher film is bores me.

And I think the response to such movies demonstrates that people will go to the theater to watch them if Hollywood actually makes them - Crash, Sideways, and Lost in Translation are just a few examples of such films.
