Cloverfield (2008) #1

did anyone see this trailer before Transformers this movie looks Incredible.

The entire thing takes place from the perspective of a party goer with a camera, waiting to surprise their friend, Rob. It's basically a nice, big bon voyage party between friends. The entire thing feels incredibly real and like plenty of parties I've been to myself--people mingle, munch on chips, chatter, etc. Rob arrives, everyone yells surprise, the camera person interviews people for anything they have to say to Rob before he leaves.

After probably 30 seconds or a little longer, the apartment shakes, the lights flicker, people scream and head to the roof. A crowd approaches the edge of the roof immediately as a massive explosion miles away takes place. People scream and start scrambling back to the stairs. Right before they enter the stairwell, something like a comet (a piece of the previous explosion) comes flying near the people and the roof. The camera is very jumpy and cuts in and out as people make their way down a darkened stairwell to the street. At this point, I can't remember if the screen cuts to black and says "From producer JJ Abrams..." or if that happens once they're all on the ground. Either way, it's at a good moment and is the first inkling as to what we're watching.

Once on the ground, some people are running in hysteria while others look into the distance trying to figure what's happening. Pieces of the explosion start flying towards the ground and hitting buildings all around. The people that were just looking into the distance finally start moving. At that moment, a massive piece of the explosion starts heading towards the camera. It flies right by and skids down the middle of the city street, hitting some people along the way. The piece finally slows down, rocks back towards the camera, and there she is--Lady Liberty's face, in flames and destroyed. Cut to black. Hitting theatres January 2008 (I think it was 01/18/08).

In my opinion this is one of the most effective trailers I've ever seen. It's not polished like most big budget film trailers, but it felt huge. It had people in the theatre chattering, wondering what the heck this is and when it's coming.

The best trailer I've seen was for Resident Evil when the whole thing looked like a female wrinkle cream commericial.

This movie definitely drew some chatter in my theaters as well. Hopwfully 2 more commericials similar to this without letting us know what it is until it's almost released would be awesome.

Amazing trailer. And once I saw "JJ Abrams" my initial reaction is "I have to see that...and it's going to be awesome."

The project's name is...

CLOVERFIELD

I don't know if this is the code name for the project, or the actual title. It is basically "Blair Witch meets Godzilla".

Also, the screenwriter is Drew Goddard ("Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" series fame).

The inside buzz is this may... MAY... Be the U.S. remake of "The Host" which is a Korean monster movie ala Godzilla. I've seen "The Host" and it was more camp than scary.

Here are some sites for your viewing pleasure:

1-18-08.COM

Ethan Haas Was Right.com

Ethan Haas Was Wrong Blogspot.com

(Ethan Haas must be the main character)

Also, while the gimmick of the whole movie being shot with hand-held with video cameras sounds cool... After about five minutes it's going to get nauseas and very irritating. This is just a gimmick and I wish studios would rely more on the strength of the concept than trying to fool people with gimmicks like this.

I don't think it has been proven that the Ethan Haas sites have anything to do with the movie.

Anyway, I'm not really a sci-fi/action fan, but Lizzy Caplan is in the film, so I am excited about that!

Cloverfield is the code name for the film.

I read an article that said that after seeing the trailer searches on the internet rose like 96% for Cloverfield. And anywhere from 56-75% for Bad Robot (JJ's production company) and for JJ Abrams.

Marketing genius really--keeping it so mysterious.

And yes, I've heard the rumors that it's a godzilla like film.

JJ can really do no wrong in my eyes, so I'm super excited about this film.

Here it is:

THE INFAMOUS TRAILER

J.J. Abrams is overrated. Most of his stuff is old ideas from the '60s and '70s repackaged for the newer generation who don't know the ideas aren't new, or original "Lost" is a prime example. All hype and no substance, IMO.

However, I am curious to see if this project ends up being something more than just hype...

I'm hoping this movie lives up to its hype. Almost everyone I know who went to see Transformers has been talking about this trailer non-stop.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that Cloverfield is just a code name. There's another one for it called Slusho, as well.
