In the Return: Midnight book, Elena used her Wings Of Destruction to destory the tree on the Nether World's moon (that's where the kitsune were coming from) and she destroyed the kitsune's star ball too. The ashes from the star ball had fallen on the spot where Damon had died and he awoke then and clawed his way out. He found Sage (which Sage is a man in the books) and he helped Damon. Damon made his way back and found Elena. __________________
