I like that he brings humor to it but it does show that he kind of has taken what others say about himself as the "truth", everyone calls him one so he also calls himself one and I think decides to act in a manner where the least/the worst they expect from him is what they get.

What I love about Damon and Alaric is that they are very honest to each other about how they each feel about something, they don't hold back, they say it like it is and try to deal with the fallout together. That's what so magical about their relationship as a whole - with so many secrets and backstabbings and people fearing to say things because they could hurt feelings and that kind of behavior that runs rampant on this show - it is Damon and Alaric who always remains true and honest to each other.
Ric may not like something Damon did or said, or Damon may get pissed off at Ric, but they aren't hiding it, they lay it all out and say their piece. Any kind of a good relationship needs honesty like that. __________________
