I don't think the show character is the same one as the book character though. They use the names sometimes (as a nod, I guess) but change a lot of things...

I still think Alaric is Damon's best friend - we have really deviated a lot from the books, I mean, Damon and Alaric were never really in each other's orbits in the book, this was strictly something that popped up on the show and took on a life of its own, so with the rising popularity of Damon/Alaric, I don't see this bond ever be viewed less than as the best of friends with the way they look out for each other.

I think of them as best friends too!
 It is not that Alaric is Damon's only friend, he is the best friend he ever had I think, the one who he connected with so much and has such an easy and close friendship with... Would be nice to have it acknowledged... __________________

Alaric isn't Damon's only friend but I think the way he and Alaric just connected with each other and fell into a working relationship and bond is something that he's never had with anyone else. You can't fight destiny!

Exactly, I don't think he is Damon's only friend but I think he is special and the best one. Damon is an easy going, sociable, fun person so I really think he can easily make "friends" easily, ESPECIALLY when he has his humanity. Even in S1, he kind of managed to make friends even though he lacked humanity - like Liz and Alaric. And we know Bree was a friend and he was genuinely hurt when she betrayed him so I think he DID consider her a real friend...
