I always assumed he was originally a decent guy but his death and need for survival made him capable of doing anything but you are right, it was really hard to tell and left to one's interpretation and also imagination.

If I remember right I think he really was an ok guy from what I recall. Now I really do need to rewatch his episodes because I don't remember exactly what happened.

I usually end up liking anti-heroes more on most shows. Perfect characters end up being just a little bit bland and come across as boring which is what Clark always kind of did. I never knew it was Tom's acting or the character really.

I think a mix of both probably though hard to be certain till one sees him in other roles too...

I think Adam when first introduced was decent enough (though he was also trying to infiltrate them I think??), but as time passed, he ran out of the drugs needed to keep him alive and started to lose it - if memory serves, that is.

You're probably right it just seems as if his circumstances are what pushed him into becoming a true villain.
