From NBC.com:
A native of Washington, D.C., Christopher Meloni returns to the cast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” for his fifth season as Detective Elliot Stabler.

Meloni makes a move to the right side of the law as Detective Elliot Stabler. “Stabler and I are alike in that we’re focused on our job and couldn’t see doing anything else with our lives,” says Meloni about his character Detective Elliot Stabler. “He’s a rock solid guy, with a great capacity for compassion, the ironic, and the absurd. He can relish the small triumphs when they come and doesn’t allow the horrors of his job to infect him.” Meloni is familiar with difficult work, spending a few years in construction before beginning his acting career.

Meloni is well known to television audiences for his portrayal of the duplicitous inmate Chris Keller on HBO’s hard-hitting critically praised series “Oz”. Additionally, he has appeared in a series of memorable guest-starring roles on some of network television’s most acclaimed series such as “Homicide: Life on the Street” as well as “NYPD Blue”, in which Meloni played Jimmy Liery, the volatile undercover target of Emmy Award winner Kim Delaney’s Detective Russell. Meloni also starred in the series “Leaving L.A”, several miniseries including “In A Child’s Name” and “Mario Puzo’s The Last Don”, and the telefilms “Shift” and “Dominick Dunne Presents: Murder in Greenwich.”

Meloni’s film credits include “Runaway Bride” in which he appeared as Julia Roberts’ fiancé. He has also been seen in such diverse films as “Bound”, “12 Monkeys”, “Junior”, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Wet Hot American Summer”, co-starring Janeanne Garofalo and David Hyde Pierce. Meloni also recently finished shooting “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle”, which is scheduled for release in 2004.

An avid traveler, Meloni has explored from Turkey to Bali and is searching for points in-between to visit. He also enjoys weightlifting, playing basketball, football, and chess and is a martial arts enthusiast. Meloni resides in New York with his wife and daughter.

According to imdb.com, a son was added to the family in January of 2004.

I don't have HBO so I never watched Oz. Did anyone watch the show? What did you think of Meloni's performance?

I'm a loyal Oz watcher. And i liked how he played the part. He played Chris a guy who manipulated everyone and he did it very good.

And ohhh, I want to see Bound. Is it good?

Yeah. He was married for about 4 times (with woman), but did have a relationship with a man in Oz.

Thanks for replying. Sounds like it'd be really interesting to watch. I always enjoying watching manipulating characters because they always seem to get their motivation from the most fascinating places.

I saw Meloni in OZ... he was so good XD I didn't get to watch all of it, but all I know was that he was in love with a lawyer (or ADA? eh...) named Beecher. lots of makeout scenes.

For people like me who do not have HBO, some Blockbuster stores rent Oz tapes/dvds. One of these days, I'll rent one to see what all the fuss is about.

I first saw Christopher in Oz. Someone suggested that I might like the show based on some of the other shows I watch and considering I don't get HBO I went to Blockbuster and rented the first couple seasons. It's a great show, but you have to have the stomach for it. It's very brutal as someone said, and very real.

Christopher doesn't come along until mid second season. His character is one of those characters you have a love-hate relationship with. You're never sure whether he's being sincere in something or if he's just trying to minipulate.

I believe that the creaters of Oz and Law & Order are good friends because there are a lot of actors who have crossed over. Here's a few just off the top of my head...

Obviously Christopher Meloni played Christopher Keller on Oz and now Elliot Stabler on SVU.

Dean Winters played Ryan O'Reily on Oz and Det. Brian Cassidy on SVU for awhile.

B.D. Wong played Father Ray on Oz and now Dr. Huang on SVU.

Katherine Erbe played Shirley Belinger on Oz and now Det. Eames on Criminal Intent.

J.K. Simmons played Ver Schillinger on Oz and played Dr. Emil Skoda on episodes on all three Law & Orders.

Plus countless guest stars on Law & Order are from Oz. I've come across a chart that shows all the actors who have crossed over and it's HUGE!

Yeah there are tons of cross-overs. I'm always like 'Hey, he's from OZ'.

Most just are guestroles, but it's always fun to see how someone who you only know as someone mean, can be so nice or sometimes even meaner.

I only saw a couple of episodes of Oz in the first season. Now that I know Chirstopher is in season 2 I have a reason to head over to blockbuster and rent the rest dvds/tapes.

I love how Meloni picks a wide range of characters to play. Granted the only thing I have seen him in so far is Murder in Greenwich,Wet Hot American Summer, and Runaway Bride. Other then SVU of course. When I saw him in Wet Hot American Summer, I was hit off guard. I didn't expect to see him. The movie itself was ok in total. The only thing about it that truely made me laugh was his character. When he was teaching that kid how to be like him with training. That was hilarious.

Does anyone know where I can find good pictures of him?
