Sydney is depicted in the series as being strong both physically and emotionally. She deals with some significant trauma over the years: the death of her fiancé, the death of her best friend, the realization that her mother was a former KGB spy, the estrangement of many of her friends and the constant activity and changes that she must endure from being a spy on a regular basis. Sydney is highly skilled in Krav Maga and is quite a polyglot, speaking English, Russian, German, Greek, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Norwegian, Swedish, Romanian, Hungarian, Hebrew, Uzbek, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Indonesian, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Vietnamese, Polish, Serbian, Czech, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian in various episodes. Throughout the series her code names are Bluebird, Freelancer, Mountaineer, and Phoenix.

Jack Bristow, a longtime agent of the CIA and former double officer with SD-6, is often emotionally distant and can be among the show's coldest and most brutal characters. However, his character's defining trait is his devotion to the safety of his daughter, Sydney. He is highly protective of her and is willing to do anything - torture, kill, even betray his country - to ensure her well-being. His relationship with his daughter has always been problematic, although it warmed and matured as the show unfolded. According to background information provided in the official Alias magazine, Jack Bristow is originally from Canada (reflecting the fact that actor Victor Garber is Canadian). A screenshot in a fourth season episode showed a laptop referring to his birth in London, Ontario. Jack's grandchild Isabelle was also born in Canada, on a mission in Vancouver.

Irina Derevko was a long-term spy for the Soviet Union. She was recruited into the KGB at the age of 18 by Alexander Khasinau. She was assigned to gain the trust of CIA agent Jack Bristow in order to get information from him, specifically concerning Project Christmas. They married and had a daughter, Sydney. In late 1981, Derevko disappeared, apparently dying in a car accident. At the end of the first season of Alias, Sydney discovered that Derevko was alive and well and was actually the leader of a criminal organization.

She really doesn't have a normal family...and she didn't sign up for it. It was her family lifestyle and yet she was trained to be a double agent. It's a cool life though but its dangerous.

I always love the Jack/Sydney moments as much as I love the Irina/Sydney moments. Sometimes I wonder if Irina could have been better being just a stay at home mom.
