He did that to lure children so he could devour them. He looks into your mind and appears as anything that might lure you in, and then changes his appearance into whatever it is you fear most. Fear, apparently "marinates the meat." I'm guessing that epinephrine makes humans taste better. If you're not afraid of him he doesn't like eating you.

No, but like I said, Pennywise isn't a clown. That's just a form he takes on. The real Pennywise was a clown in a traveling carnival in the late 1800s that happened to pass through the town of Derry, Maine, during the same time as a massacre that happened and most of the townspeople vanished. I'm guessing that IT killed Pennywise and took on his form afterwards. It's real form is actually more like a giant spider.

Stephen King made pretty much his entire canon a mythology, Rita. That's what his Dark Tower series is for, connecting all of his novels to a "multiverse."
