Professor X is Charles Francis Xavier. He is a mutant. His mutant power is telepathy. His power is so strong he can control the minds of others. He created a private boarding school to protect and train young mutants. Some of these became his X-Men, a group of mutant heroes.

He is the longtime friend of Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr). However, they parted ways when he chose to advocate co-existence with humans while Magneto chose to advocate separation from, superiority over, and sometimes military rebellion against humans.

He is a cripple, forever confined to a wheelchair. Per comic legend, he became a paraplegic in a rock fall battling the alien called Lucifer. Also per comic legend he is the step-brother of Cain Marko (Juggernaut).

In X-Men: First Class, an alternate origin of Xavier's paraplegia is given when a bullet, shot by Agent Moira McTaggert at Erik Lehnsherr, is deflected by Lensherr. The bullet accidentally hits Xavier and severs his spine.

Professor Xavier is 'killed' during a telepathic battle with Jean Grey as the Phoenix. His body is destroyed but he is able to transfer his mind to the body of a man with no brain functions under the care of an old friend Dr. Moira MacTaggart.
