Actually, the Punisher goes back before the '80s. He first appeared in the '70s as a guy recruited by the Jackal to take out Spider Man.

Nightcrawler was ok. I liked him because he was pals with Logan, Colossus and Kitty, but I never saw what was the big deal about the guy.
