Daniel Day Lewis played Lincoln as a posh Brit. It was all wrong. He hadn't the first notion of how to get him right.

Cumberbatch is super-British. He couldn't ever convincingly play someone who wasn't British.

Some actors can fit into another nationality enough, but some actors are way too stuck to their nationality and can't do it.

Cate Blanchett managed English well enough in the Elizabeth films, but she was a dead loss playing Irish in Veronica Guerin.

Ah, how did I know you'd take issue with her playing Veronica Guerin?

Really? I heard Daniel Day Lewis even got Lincoln's voice right, the first actor to portray him as high pitched, which is how historians and journalists of the time described him. I guess it's all about the subtleties. I guess Gwyneth Paltrow playing English characters also didn't pass muster with you?

I don't pay much attention to Gwyneth Paltrow if I can help it. She was terrible in Shakespeare in Love of course, bloodless performance.

Daniel Day Lewis portrayed Lincoln as a British upper class type, rather than as a guy born in a log cabin.

Blanchett as Guerin was so wrong. I don't why they couldn't have cast an Irish actress.

Are there any high profile Irish actresses? I guess Blanchett gets cast because of her status.

Have you ever seen any American actors give a convincing performance as a European?

And just to bring things back to topic, here's something interesting.

There are high profile Irish actresses now, like Saoirse Ronan and Catriona Balfe from Outlander. I'm not sure about back then. But you don't need high profile actors to make successful film, and that's been proven a thousand times. And Cate Blanchett shouldn't have been cast as an Irishwoman (also a specific famous real life Irishwoman who she looked nothing like) any more than she should be cast as a black woman or a Frenchman. She was also pretty horribly miscast in the 4th Indiana Jones film. Classic example of a Western actor messing up playing a Russian.

You'd get along with my co-mod on The Borgias. She also doesn't like non-Russian actors playing Russians.

As for Caitriona and Saoirse(damn, those Irish names are tough), you'd be correct that they were nowhere near old enough at the time. I think Caitriona was still a Victoria's Secret runway model, and Saoirse was playing Michelle Pfeiffer's daughter in a movie. Speaking of, Saoirse has played Americans before, you know.

I agree, you don't need big name actors, but you know Hollywood.

And I can't wait for New Mutants to come out so we can have actual discussions about it.

Saoirse was born in the US, so she has a right to play Americans. Though she was also raised in Ireland and has Irish parents, so she's Irish too.

Yeah, but she moved to Ireland at age 3. Does she even remember growing up in New York? I can hardly remember anything before age 4.

So basically, Cannonball should be played by an American, right? I guess you feel the same way about Jean Grey? Famke is Dutch, just so you know. So we've had two straight non-American actresses playing Jean.

Being born in a country is significant. And people can remember things from very early. I can remember stuff from when I was 1.

Yeah I know Famke Janssen is Dutch. I've known that since the '90s. Jean Grey should be played by an American, but Sophie is ok seeing as she's such a good actress, even if she does come off English in the role. Sam Guthrie/Cannonball should be played by an actor from the American South.

You do like Sophie? That's something, at least. And you know what's ironic is that Tye Sheridan/Cyclops is from Texas, so he'd actually be better for Cannonball... if he weren't so damn short.

I don't think he'd fit Cannonball at all.

Too short, right?

I think a young Matthew McConaughey might have worked.

Not so much the height as the sort of face and the sort of screen personality he projects, not to mention his hair colour. And McConaughey would be way too smug.

Yeah, Tye is a bit too youngish. Any idea on who you'd cast as Cannonball?

I don't know. There are endless numbers of untried young actors out there. If they really searched they could find someone perfect.
