Did you ever see the 1984 movie, Sarah? I always thought that the movie might've been better if Ridley Scott had done it instead of David Lynch. Lynch didn't really capture the novel correctly, nor was he able to translate it to the screen well enough for audiences. I wish Ridley had done Dune instead of that awful Legend movie with Tom Cruise, but perhaps after Alien and Blade Runner he wasn't in the mood for another science fiction movie.

Oh, and Patrick Stewart/Charles Xavier was in the original Dune movie. So both Charles Xaviers were in the Dune films.

Oh, your dad was into the Russian writers, sum1? Those guys go on and on. I liked Poe as well, but my dad really wasn't into those kind of writers.

Yeah, I agree that Dune definitely went on too long. I saw the sci-fi channel version as well as David Lynch's 1984 version. I actually felt sorry for Irulan in the sci-fi version and I wished that she and Paul could've ended up together in Children of Dune. I like her a lot better than Chani and thought Julie Cox had better chemistry with Alec Newman. At least they had one really good kissing scene before Paul left Arrakeen and went into the desert. And of course, James McAvoy was Paul's son, Leto.
I didn't like the tv series based on Dune. I liked Lynch's movie, the longer tv cut. I like the book, deplore the sequels.

You're right, the sequel books really weren't necessary. I liked Lynch's movie for the visual imagery and the performances, but the technology of the time really wasn't advanced enough to really bring it to life. Either that, or they used the wrong FX company. I also wish the story had been translated to the screen better.

For me it was even longer than that, Sarah.
