Magneto and Mystique pretty much had nothing to do with each other in the comics I read. Which is a vast section of X-Men history, btw.

Yes, this is true. Mystique was mostly involved in Rogue's backstory and wasn't really involved with Magneto's. The whole Magneto/Mystique thing was a plotline created by Bryan "pervert" Singer and Zak "the hack" Penn in the original X-Men trilogy that the creators of First Class decided to pick up on and go with.
