I get what you mean, Rita, but I'm against changing that name for a good reason. For one, a poll taken a few years ago showed that 90% of Native Americans didn't really care about the name one way or the other. But secondly, and most importantly, if you open the door to getting rid of the name "Redskins," the next thing the PC police will target are the Kansas City Chiefs, MLB's Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians, and maybe even the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks. Even if some might say those names aren't same, they could still call them inappropriate or even appropriative. The Chiefs fans at Arrowhead Stadium and the Braves fans at Sun Trust Park still do the tomahawk chop and the Native American chant during their games.

And then what's next? How about the New England Patriots? The PC police could call that name jingoistic and nationalistic and say that it's also inappropriate. Then there's the fact that the name harkening back to the Revolutionary War period and events like the Boston Tea Party and Paul Revere's ride, all of which happened during the time slavery still existed. Colin Kaepernick criticized Nike for their 4th of July sneakers having the Betsy Ross flag on them because according to him, the Betsy Ross flag was hurtful because it was created during a time when slavery still existed, even though the Betsy Ross flag has nothing to do with slavery. It's not like the Confederate flag. A lot of other things existed when slavery existed, like our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, which was written in 1812. Just because something is adjacent to something else does not make it equivalent to that something. But if Kaepernick could convince Nike to cancel their 4th of July sneakers because of that, then who's to say they couldn't do the same with the New England Patriots. Or the Dallas Cowboys? Or the New Orleans Saints, because that name sounds too religious?

Or how about the Buffalo Bills from Buffalo, NY? They're named after Buffalo Bill Cody, whose wild west shows are often criticized for having depicted Indians as villains. Or how about Kaepernick's old team, the San Francisco 49ers? That team is named after the California Gold Rush of 1849, which made San Francisco a boomtown and the modern city it is today, and coined the phrase, "Miner 49er," which the team is named for. But the 1849 Gold Rush also displaced and dislocated many of the Native American tribes in California. So how long before the PC police decide that name is also inappropriate? Once you open that door, you can't close it again.
