I normally shop at Goodwill for books. Paperbacks are 50 cents and hardbacks are a dollar.

Goodwill is also great for Halloween costumes, and the usual dress up items for kids

I can't get out much so I usually look for bargains online. However, I love charity shops and have got some lovely bargain clothes from them over the decades. I also buy books, glassware and jewellery etc. from them. I like the online charity shops, like Oxfam, too, and once bought a really rare book from there to give to my friend, who wanted it but couldn't find it anywhere.

I've never heard of Value Village. We had a Value City here, but it's been shut down for a few years or so.

I love books. I often used my dollar on Saturday's for books at yard sales. My mamaw had five grand children that she took with her every Saturday we would be piled either in my pawpaws big yellow car or my mom's and aunt's car (they wouldn't just one of them fit all five of us. plus that meant they were going instead of pawpaw She gave everyone of us a dollar. They would spoil us rotten else (any store) where but yard-sales and fleamarkets it was bargain, bargain, and bargain. (sometimes if we bargained we could earn a quarter or so.

Has anyone felt self conscious when shopping in these type of stores? Bargained items could possibly lead to having a view point of being poor.

I use to feel like this when I first started to go to Goodwill; and then I realize these stores are here to help people gain things they wouldn't necessarily get if it was a regular store. For instance, I knew these people who lost their clothes and other items in a fire... they went to Goodwill to try and get some items for themselves at a cheaper price. I remember my mother feeling a bit outraged that Goodwill couldn't donate anything to them due to their circumstance. Sadly, people may make up thing just to get free items...

I've never felt self-conscious, and I've been going to charity shops and bargain shops since the Eighties. I find things in there that I just wouldn't find anywhere else and you can get some lovely stuff.

I really feel for that family and all people who have lost their belongings. That's such a shame Goodwill couldn't donate to the family.

I don't know much about Goodwill, but in the UK we have charity shops, which are for specific charities, like Oxfam, Cancer Research, Shelter, British Heart Foundation etc.

Oh yes, charity shops are awesome. I used to volunteer in one during the Nineties - serving, sorting clothes etc, and I really enjoyed it. We have several of them in my town, and they're good for giving stuff you don't want anymore, like jewellery and clothes etc. I've even been able to get presents from them too. I once got my mum a beautiful Spanish lady doll with a guitar (to go with the ones she bought in Spain in the Sixties). The online versions are good too, as I do most of my shopping on the net.

Tina, I used to be self-cautious and everything when going to shop there, but then I realized "Why?" because, now I'm completely able to get things I want for not only Christmas gifts, but heck! I can get an outfit much cheaper, name brands, and still have the original price tags on them, yet, Goodwill sells it for much less!
