So in going through with my name change, I realize that once I do it I'll have the first ever English surname in my family
I'm looking at my family tree. On my dad's side it goes back 5 generations of Spanish names. On my mom's side going back 7 generations they're all Spanish names too. I was talking to a girl in my class today. She has the most Spanish name ever (so long I can't remember the rest of it) and yet she's of German descent. So I figure if that's possible then it's possible for me, a Hispanic/Mexican Indian/Spanish and whatever other Spanish I come from to take on an English name. Slightly ironic given all the Native American history I've read in my life in which they were forced to assimilate and take on a white name. I just think that's so cool and it will certainly make me unique in my own family history. __________________

Things didn't go so well with my parents. I figured as much. I love them but they're a bit conservative sometimes. They just don't want the added work of changing everything from the name in their will to the insurance and everything else.
I still plan on doing it though- only no wit's a bit more complicated. __________________

One thing that I'm going to do for sure when the time comes of having my own kids- I'm never giving them Mexican names
They're nice and all don't get me wrong but I just can't see my kids having some kind of Mexican/Hispanic name. Again it's the whole breaking away from the status quo thing. Everyone in my family has some Mexican name or another. I don't think it's ever occured to anyone to break away from that. The way I figure just because you're a certain ethnicity doesn't necessarily make you so. I don't speak the language, I don't listen to the music. I'm more of a cross between Native American and White than I am my born race and culture __________________

I think it would be good for you to break away. Today's and future's generations are so modern.

Yeah. And personally (and I mean no offense to anyone I swear), Mexican names are too old fashioned and outdated. A the same time that is what makes them cool and unique but if you can break away from tradition then why not?
I mean hell I was looking at past generations dating 7 back and not anywhere is there a non-Hispanic name in there (first names and last names!) All the more reason why I would like to change my last name too. LOL my problem (in a way) is that my sister and I are two free spirits- we're not the kids/type of people that our parents were expecting us to be __________________

Aw It sounds like your parents are "old fashion" when it comes to their culture, in a sense.

My mom was heavy into soaps when she had me. IDK if it was the actresses name, or the character she named me after I'm 50/50 on my name. It's "Josie". It's unique and I don't hear it often. The down side of this name is no one pronounces it right. They pronounce Joe C, when really it's Joe Z. IDK how to describe it better. Also when I pronounce it over the phone people come up with Jody, and Jacey, and it's just ridiculous at times.
