Slightly OT, but how exactly is acceptance gained into US/Canadian universities? I've heard of GPA through watching too many TV progs set in North American high schools () but don't quite understand??

To keep this on the history topic: Does anyone have one ultimate favourite historical figure?

For Canadian universities, well the one I applied to it's based on grade 12 final marks and if you took the required provincial math and English exam. You have to take those even if you do not go in to university.

Oh, great idea for a topic. My personal favorite periods are Ancient Greece, specifficly there mythology and I think that's why I gravitate more towards them rather than the romans. Greek Mythology is much more established in my opinion. And I love Tudor England. From the War of the Rose's to the end of Elisabeth the 1st reign. But especially Henry the VIII's reign, truly fasinating in my opinion.

I also gravitate towards 'mysterys' of history. The Princes in the tower and The lost colony of Roanoke for instance both of which tie in with Tudor history. I only just found out about The Lost Colony of Roanoke this year actually and I found it rather interesting that it's a pretty well know part of American history but I have yet to meet one person in England who has heard of the Colony of Roanoke. Even my History Buff friends didnt have a clue what I was going on about.

And Henry the VIII is by far my favorite Historical figure.

Never heard of the Lost Colony?! I love the Lost Colony. Always wonder how a whole colony just disappears like that.

And GPA is your grade point average. 4.0 is an A average 3.0 B etc. Each school system has a different name for the highest classes but I'll use mine. Your English, Math, Science, and History classes are either standard, advanced or in your Junior and Senior year some of the classes are AP (which is college level at the end of your senior year you can take certain AP classes if you score high enough earn college credit for that class). Levels 4 and 5 in language also consider AP classes. AP classes and the advance classes for the courses that aren't available in AP are graded on a 5.0 scale ( as an A is 5.0 B 4.0 etc). Expect for Chemistry and US History (because of scheduling conflicts) I always took the highest level. I basically had over an 4.0 average my whole high school. I know the end of my junior year I was number 11 in my class out of like 180 something students. Each college is looking for something different. Most of the really good colleges are looking for 3.0 GPA, high SAT test score (they test your skill in Math, English and Writing mine sucked) and a well rounded personality (a lot of extra curricular activities.)

Hope that explains it a little better.

It is such a fascinating subject. From them going over to America and the men returning to England and then having to wait several years before they could return to the Colony and then not even having a chance to properly search for the people of the Colony because they had to return to England.

r.
I wish the Colonisation of America and the War of Independence was more widely taught in the UK. It's a huge part of our history that gets overlooked.

Thanks for the GPA explanation!

Yeah, I feel terrible for having never heard ot it, but it's true that we hardly get taught any American history over here in the UK (well it seems that way to me), unless we choose to at university!

In high school the main topics I remember being taught were things like the middle ages in England & the world wars. I chose to study Early Modern History at As/Alevel (age 16-18) which was focused on Europe from 1500-1800 & at university I studied ancient history so... I am severly lacking in American history knowledge. I'd like to right that wrong though!

I actually had never heard of the Colony either We cover American History up here but tbh Grade 10 History is mainly Canadian then I took Western Civilization which covered beginning of time until about 1600's then took the 2nd part to the course

I actually didn't know how the GPA worked related to High School I just knew the Aphla part of it, my first college experience was when I learned of the GPA. My first diploma was like a 2.7 but first term of this experience is 3.4-3.6 but will find out tonight I know that I will need atleast a 3.5 for what I want. So will be a fun/rough time to get into Uni

My focus is mainly Roman I just love the Gladiators but for me its the things that they built. Plus they were so unbelievable smart, we use their law system now with the civil law. They mainly built the first "roads" and they also had the calender Then its Medieval and mainly related to the myths am a big Arthurian ameatuar fan Im still annoyed that King Arthur course went against Ancient Civilizations time conflict, so Arthur better be available next year or hell to pay. I also just find its a gorgeous period, castles and knights Then its back to Ancient with Greece and its so their mythology for me the Greek Gods and Trojan War

I all periods but really really want to learn more Tudors sadly had only heard of Henry the VIII and then saw first season of the show. Tried to continue but I like to do marathons and it was hard to do more than an episode or two. But really want to learn more. Also alot of the recent history too from the past 300-400 years would be awesome too

Nevermind, I learned about the Lost Colony when we did colonization in Western Civil outlined but learned about it, yea

^ Saw the link in your signature so I thought I'd stop by.

My BA is in Humanities with a double major in History and English, and a minor in Comparative Religious Philosophy. (Scary, right? ) My favorite time periods are Victorian, Edwardian, and Medieval (and that's what I specialized in with English literature as well.)

There's a lot of Civl War history here in Mississippi, too. I've visited Beauvoir (last home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis) in Biloxi many times...unfortunately it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina; five of the seven buildings there were destroyed.

Beauvoir before Katrina
Beauvoir after Katrina

And I went to graduate school at the University of Mississippi (also known as Ole Miss--go Rebs!) which is a really interesting place historically. There is a mass grave on campus behind the Coliseum of (if I recall properly) about 3,000 soldiers from the Battle of Shiloh. The Lyceum (now an office building on campus) was turned into a hospital at that time. Every student who was enrolled in Ole Miss when the South seceeded later died in the Civil War.; they were known as the University Greys.

Me, too. Love the story of Roanoke. My favorite History Mystery: the 1924 Everest Expedition. We'll never really know what happened there until Sandy Irvine's body and his camera are found.

I read tons of stuff in Middle English. And I can tell you things about the lives of Victorian authors that you really do not want to know.

When I think about it I guess it makes sense that others wouldn't know too much about it. I couldn't tell you one thing about Canadian history.

Speaking of medieval times, does anyone remember the game from the 90s Weapons and Warriors?
