Also, if the majority is YES they also can choose to vote no in parliament which is why this is a 'Kangaroo-court' sort of thing with this expensive postal vote thing that is half-arsed voluntary with BS lies on the no campaign against it - this is just simply history repeating itself! I went through the SAME bloody thing when John Coward...erm, Howard was PM - he did the same 'half-arsed' voluntary vote for 'becoming a republic'! The NO campaign claimed (over 80 things in our constitution will be altered if you vote YES!!1!!11!!111!1!!!') - - the same scare-mongering as in the NO campaign in this voluntary half-arsed vote the same conservative party as back then did... 77 of those changes were SIMPLY changing the word 'Queen/King' to 'President'!!!!! The other 3 were the actual constitutional parts which WOULD have made our system MORE democratic Not LESS! Howard did only one thing - - ONE redeeming thing for the ENTIRE 11.5 years he was leader of Australia! That was in 1996 when he did Gun Reform after the biggest gun massacre done by a solo person in global history. It took nearly 20 years for the many massacres in the U.S from guns to eventually overtake the loss of life from the Port Arthur Massacre. This was the ONLY good thing he did in his reign, I commend that - give credit where due - but EVERYTHING else he has done and still does after he was booted out of politics (lost the federal election and even his seat he had for over 30 consecutive years!) was utterly deplorable! By the way, he has stated he will vote NO. Well, no surprise there!

If the majority of the people vote to "allow" same-sex marriage (as if such a thing even needs to be "allowed" in this day and age in a modern democracy ), wouldn't your elected officials lose face completely if they don't act on it?

Like, why bother doing a referendum if you're saying that, whatever the result, you plan on going ahead with your own view of things?

How do you survive a further election if that's your stated approach to the electorate?

You'd think but don't think they see that

All we are voting on is the liberal party being allowed to vote however they want instead of following their party beliefs of against it

Well, wow. My apologies. I was under the impression that the vote was about same-sex marriage full-stop.

This is just about "letting" elected officials vote their "conscience"?

Wow.

Pretty much, yeah. The question is asking if we want same-sex marriage legalised but all we're really doing is seeing if they'll allow a conscience vote

This isn't a small, bylaw-type issue, though.

This is a bona fide human rights issue.

When's the vote, then? I mean, the one in parliament.

Now you know why Australia's really not happy about this. Its stupid

We'll know the result of the postal survey on November 15. Providing the yes votes are the majority then the parliament vote will be some time after that. If no is the majority then there will be no vote in parliament

That's some profound insanity. Want to be "cheered up"?

It's 2017, for pete's sake.

This is NOT a referendum it is a Plebiscite.....this means that EVEN if the YES got majority the Liberal Party (Aussie conservatives in power right now) can STILL choose to ignore that and not do a vote - this is the main reason why it is stupid and a waste of $122million dollars that could have gone onto roads, infrastructure or education or even medicine/science. Meanwhile they could just do a Compulsory Referendum from us not a pathetic Plebiscite which is voluntary.

I mean, people have been stealing the voting forms from letterboxes so that people can't vote YES... That is really loooowww!!! Many of those people might not realize that they can order a replacement form from the Electoral Commission, but they can! Some people might not give a damn or bother with the hassle to call up the Electoral Commission to get a replacement form sent out. The new form will override anything that was 'ticked' on the old form.

If that's directed at me, I already know all of that . I was just trying to explain/answer Sunny's question. I suppose what I should have said is that in theory there will be a vote after the results. But there is a part of me which holds some hope that the government isn't going to put us through all of this crap & then just do nothing still (although it wouldn't surprise me)

What they should have just done is have a conscience vote in parliament & not waste anyone's time or taxpayers money asking us anything. This is just a tactic to delay things & avoid doing what the liberal party don't want to do

what? Why is this world full of idiots? I would like to think by now enough studies have been done to prove that homosexuality isn't a disease so things like judges backing anti-gay therapy shouldn't happen. But if you're in those sorts of positions I'd also like to think that personal opinions on homosexuality shouldn't come into your work. If you don't believe in homosexuality then treat other things, don't push your personal belief that its a disease which needs to be fixed. Especially when there's far worse things out there

I totally agree with you, Chelle!

Also it angers me when someone says "they don't believe in homosexuality". They are saying they don't believe in a thing that it is so obvious exists in the world and when they do say it, it only make them look . Because the ones who are saying it the most are the ones who believe in God and there is no real proof of him/her/it existing so... They don't have to like it, but using "don't believe" for something that truly exists make no sense at all to me.

It doesn't make sense to me either to believe in something which clearly does exist (regardless of if they believe in God which has no proof) but each to their own I guess they just haven't had someone in their life who is homosexual or if they do they just think its something they choose. Why anyone would choose to be homosexual doesn't make sense to me either. To me that'd be choosing a harder life where people judge you apposed to choosing to be heterosexual & considered normal. The logic behind not believing in it or thinking its a choice doesn't work in my mind

Yeah, it doesn't work in my mind either.

Some people seems so narrow minded. Why would some in the LGBT+ have such a hard time coming out to family/friends if it was a choice? Why is it hard for some LGBT+ to accept and love themself? Why would some in the LGBT+ even kill themself because of who they are if it was a choice? Why can't these people, who thinks it is a choice, start thinking about these things too? That if it was a choice these things wouldn't happen and that being an LGBT+ is actually something that you are born with. But no, that won't happen, because they are to narrow minded and doesn't want to step out of their precious box to learn something about it..

Anyone saying they "don't believe in homosexuality" is being as stupid as if they were saying "I don't believe in red-heads." Like, look around, dude, and welcome to the 21st century. Gay people exist. They have since the beginning of human history. Get with the programme.

And, for the love of all that is holy, stop pretending that you're in charge of what God can and cannot do. Being narrow-minded and blaming God for it? That's just not on.
