Food Allergies Thread #1: Our system considers it a poison so we manage around it

I didn't see a thread for this so I hope it's okay that I opened one.

I was just curious if there was anyone out there who suffers from food allergies. And if so what are you allergic to and how do you manage them?

I'm deathly allergic to pine nuts. If not treated within seconds of having them unknowingly then I could die.

I'm also intolerant to some gluten and casien items, but that comes and goes I have to get tested for it frequently.

With the pine nuts next time I have them I will have to be life lighted to the nearest hospital, because my throat closes up, I pass out, can't breath. No eppie pen/steroid works anymore I have to have iv fluids and get the medicines from the eppie pen there. I get hives on the inside of my body, chills, fevers, and I throw up a lot.

Wow that is harsh.

For me it's a lot of throwing up. Even if something gets contaminated within a minute to 10 depending on the severity I end up throwing up. It's very embarassing especially as there have been times when I've had to leave the table in a middle of a group because of it. And then people get concerned and worry.

I once lost 10 pounds in a month because of constant purging.

The last time it happened was my uncle's wedding.

I had a smalll bite.

Ended up in the hospital for 5 hours with 9 eppie pen shots, 7 breathing treatments and so much pain killers.

Wow. Yeah that's intense.

Recently I went to my gastro doctor and he had me go to the hospital to run some radiation tests. The results from that showed that my gallbladder was working at 31% which is only 6% above of when they need to do surgery. That's been a result of the constant purging.

There are somethings you should try.

EnjoyLife products and Sunbutter. Sunbutter is like peanut butter, but made from sunflower seeds. Make sure you get the one with the yellow lid, there's oil in it yes, but I've noticed that the one with the red lid is more dry. I had it once before and I couldn't remember if I picked up the yellow lid, or the red lid because it was so long ago when I went to Whole Foods, they have a health food and allergy section at my grocery store and I missed sunbutter. I don't get it often enough because it runs between 5.99 - 6.99 for the standard size of what the regular size bottle of peanut butter would be.

It's funny that you mention sunflower seeds because I'm horribly allergic to those. I keep an Epipen in my purse. Luckily I've never had to use since I received the prescription for the Epipen. I'm very, VERY careful about what I eat and make sure that the bread and granola bars that I eat are sunflower seed free.

Lol!!

Well, it's like you always get it when you don't need it, and when you needed it you didn't have it.

I don't have an Epipen though I should, just try and stay away from Pine Nuts.

I don't have an epi pen either. Not sure how that would work with food allergies.

The doctors have prescribed me promethezine but I've stopped using it because it makes me too sleepy.

I would rather get an allergic reaction and sleep than have to take that medication to prevent an allergic reaction and get sleepy that way because it's more inconvienent.

Epi Pens are made for food allergies as well as other allergies. It helps stop an attack if you need a dose of the medicine.

You know what I foresee as a possible problem way down in the future?

If it happens, and I doubt it will but you never know- is that if I get pregnant (and I have no intention of it because I'm not even sure I want kids yet) but if it were to happen I would most likely have a hard time because I wouldn't be sure if it was morning sickness or a food allergy episode.

I don't know why I've been thinking about that lately. I guess because it's a possible "what if" scenario.

That could really be a problem, Ron.

My food allergies and food sensitivities didn't show up until after my second child was born.
Year round enviornmental allergies began after my first child was born.
I have found that when I eat properly, and avoid my problem foods, my enviornmental allergies improve.
Of course Fall/Autum and Spring are bad times of the year even with my allergy nose spray, Rhinocort. Just the smell of peanutbutter gives me an asthma attack. I have my quick acting inhaler that help me breathe immediately and benadryl.

Another allergic reaction to something today and I got the hives. I am also allergic to yellow cake mix, was making a birthday cake for my friend for her birthday, and suddenly I'm itchy, sneezy.

Awww Mandie That is no fun

Approx 18 years ago, I was so sensitive to turkey that even with it in the oven, I broke out in the back of my neck and upper neck with a sunburn rash. Aso, had a big time asthma attack. up to that point, had never had a reaction to turkey. The Specialist I was seeing that is an expert on food and enviornmental allergies/sensitivities, confirmed my "sunburn rash" from a chemical reaction from just smelling the turkey.

Our body's reactions can be so strange, unreal, & even science fiction like. After all, foods can really react like poison in our systems. Differently in each person.
