Just took my dog to the park this morning, had a lot of friends to play with including a Cockerpoo puppy. On the way back she wanted to say hello to a little black dog and he peed at a post, which of course she had to sniff. So she sniffed, and then cocked her own leg up as if she were a boy. Such odd behaviour. It's not the first time she's done that though. But I'm curious as to why she does it. Does anyone know or had a female dog that did that?

Liv, my female dog would do that sometimes. I always though she was just trying to reach the area where another dog had marked. She didn't do it a lot though. Now I've caught Beast squatting to pee and I was shocked because I've never seen a boy dog do that but ever so often he'll squat now my dad's little pip squeak of a dog lifts his leg to pee but just recently started to scratch the grass backwards after seeing Beast do that. So maybe it's a copy cat behavior

You know, that's funny, 'cause my sister's Springer Spaniel, Archie, actually has never cocked his leg to pee and always squats. My Pippa always scratches the grass after she does her business. She never copied any dog doing that it's just instinct. But yeah, her cocking her leg could be copycat behaviour. It's like she's looking at the boys doing it and thinking, "hey, I can do that!"

just did a quick search about it...someone said her dog does it so she doesn't get her feet wet. Someone else said it could be an alpha female thing... It's apparently more common than I realized.

I thought that scratching was instinctual too, but my dads dog in the few months he's had him had never done it until he spent a few hours with Beast.

Dogs can be weird like that but it's fun to see their different personality and behavior quirks
