News & Politics Lite | The Lighter Side of News & Politics #8

While this is the Lighter side of the news, it should be noted that some topics within this thread could contain stories, images and discussions that may cause a triggering event. To be respectful of everyone on the El&I board we have divided the News & Politics thread into two separate categories. "Lite" & "Sensitive"

This is the Lite thread. Topics discussed here should be the ones that fall on the lighter side of the news such as political cartoons, presidential campaigns, advances in science & technology....etc. The darker side of the news should be posted here News & Politics | Sensitive Topics this thread is clearly labeled so those who may be upset by certain topics can avoid them.

Thanks.

Mike Dubke, White House communications director, quits

Didn't even last three months. And they're cutting down on press briefings. That's not ominous at all.

I've given up on watching Sean Spicer's press briefings. If people find them entertaining or newsworthy though then great I guess.

Glad she apologized for that picture.I think that Trump can bring out the worst in people & that seems to have happened here.

I doubt it'll make the people who usually say that the U.S. newsmedia is all liberal-biased all the time realize just how wrong they are, but I wasn't surprised CNN sacked her.

I've been trying to figure out all day if a Conservative comedian had done a similar stunt, whether I'd have had the same reaction. And, honestly, I couldn't come up with an answer. Because Conservative jokes tend to be so aggressive... which I suppose a beheading is obviously aggressive. But the idea that Kathy Griffin could be implying this is something that should happen...

Of course, as I always say, freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from the consequences of your speech. So that's what she's going through right now. She's old enough to have known how it would be.

Not surprising if this President doesn't know what he's talking about.

Yeah, I don't think there's any "ifs" about it. Wasn't he elected precisely because he had no personal experience or knowledge of how government/politics work?

I mean, I think that was the cited appeal, right? "He doesn't know what he's doing. Let's give him the most powerful job in the world."

Qatar row: Trump claims credit for isolation

Trump: If it's not all the Muslims, how come the other Muslims never say anything against terrorism?

Four "Muslim" countries: Qatar funds several terrorism organizations, so we're putting an embargo on it.

Trump: You're welcome!

Did you watch Jim Comey's testimony today? I missed it. I did see though Trump's lawyer give his little speech. Don Jr. tweeted during it & he is no fan Jim Comey I tell you. What do you think? Is this a witch hunt like Trump's son says it is?

I was at work, so I didn't see it. But I guess it's safe to say that whether you believe the Trump boys or James Comey depends on whether you believe in facts or in alternative facts.

What's your opinion?

Well his testimony re-aired on C-SPAN last night, so I did see some it there. It wasn't too surprising about what he said. He thinks Trump is a liar & Trump thinks the same of him.

Yeah, but Trump is also telling everyone that Comey's testimony vindicated him (Trump). So, you know, he's pretty much telling everyone that he (Trump) can't be trusted.

So, I don't know, but I wouldn't come away thinking they're equally reliable here.

Qatar hires former U.S. attorney general to help with regional crisis

Quote:
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Qatar has paid $2.5 million to the law firm of a former attorney general under U.S. President George W. Bush to audit its efforts at stopping terrorism funding, a matter at the heart of the Gulf diplomatic crisis that erupted last week.

John Ashcroft personally will lead his Washington-based firm's efforts "to evaluate, verify and as necessary, strengthen the client's anti-money laundering and counterterrorism financing" compliance, according to documents filed to the U.S. Justice Department.

Qatar hiring Ashcroft, who was attorney general during the Sept. 11 attacks and then helped push through the Patriot Act, appeared aimed at appeasing the Gulf nations now trying to isolate it. Officials in Qatar, home to a major U.S. military base, and Ashcroft's firm did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates severed diplomatic ties with Qatar, the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and cut off land, sea and air routes to the tiny peninsular nation that relies on food imports. Its long-haul carrier Qatar Airways has also been affected.

At the heart of the dispute are the long-standing allegations linking Qatar to regional Islamist and militant groups. Qatar denies supporting terrorist organizations, but Western officials regularly have accused Qatar's government of allowing or even encouraging the funding of some Sunni extremists. Qatar also has hosted a leader of Hamas, the militant Islamic group ruling the Gaza Strip, as well as members of the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni Islamist group that Gulf nations consider a threat to their hereditary rule.

The Ashcroft Law Firm filed the paperwork with the Justice Department's National Security Division on Friday. Such reports are required by the Foreign Agents Registration Act, first put in place over concerns about Nazi propagandists operating in the U.S. ahead of World War II.
