High School Musical 1 gave us the story of Troy Bolton, basketball playmaker and East High's hottie superbum,
and his journey to discovering more about himself. Fate played its part in unveiling Troy's undiscovered passion
and talent for music and the art of performance. Ultimately Troy proves triumphant, proving that you don't need
to be defined by the status quo of any particular stereotype.

Troy's journey in High School Musical 2 takes him to a scary place - contemplating his future. What began as a
fun and productive way to spend his summer - working with his friends - became a moral dilemma. Balancing
friends and fun with the opportunities provided by the Redhawks and a promotion was harder than anticipated,
and Troy began to question his life priorities. He learns the value of remaining true to oneself.

The pressures of senior year and making decisions about the future are prevalent in High School Musical 3,
where Troy is faced with deciding where he will be after college. His life path had always been set in stone - to
follow in his fathers footsteps by playing basketball at the University of Albuquerque. However when
faced with alternate prospects - such as pursuing his love of theater, or attending one of the other schools who've
contacted him - Troy must cast aside the expectations everyone else has for him and make the decision which is right for him.

Zachary David Alexander Efron was born October 18, 1987, to loving parents David and Starla Efron. Growing up in San Luis Obispo, California, Zac lived a laidback lifestyle of an average kid coming from a loving family. He had a passion for performing, participating in local theater productions and gaining small guest appearances on shows such as Firefly, ER, Without A Trace and The Guardian. It was a recurring guest role on Summerland - which became a spot as a permanent cast member - which propelled Zac to small time fame. But it wasn't until landing the role of Troy Bolton in the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical that Zac became somewhat of a household name. His subsequent role as Link Larkin in 2007's Hairspray remake which proved that Zac has the chops to really make a name for himself in the business.

Since then, Zac returned to his role of Troy Bolton in DCOM High School Musical 2 and once again on the big screen for High School Musical 3. He's proved himself as an award winning comedic actor for his role of Mike O'Donnell in 17 Again; waded out into dramatic waters both in Me and Orson Welles in late 2009; and in the July 2010 release of The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud. He has established his own production company entitled Ninjas Runnin' Wild which has a slew of projects under its belt in the works and in development. In between establishing his career as a versatile, charismatic and talented actor, Zac has filmed guest appearances for Entourage and Robot Chicken, participated in worldwide press tours, and been featured on the covers of prestigious magazines including GQ, Interview and Rolling Stone. Through all the fame and being one of America's most sought after young talents, Zac remains humble and genuine, living life as normally as he can and always expressing gratitude for the support he receives. Undoubtedly High School Musical was only the beginning for Zac.

While the topic of Zac Efron might be pushing the limits of a Marin-centric blog, I figure there has to be a tie in somewhere...as in his photo on the cover of People this week is in my local Safeway. Anyway, back to the story. I just got back from the glorious Maui Film Festival with my family, where teen heart throb Zac Efron was in attendance to accept a Shining Star Award. From my two preteen daughters, the buzz of "where is Zac Efron staying" was deafening. One source (10-year old) from the beach told them he had rented out the 8th floor of the Grand Wailea. Another informant on the Grand Wailea water slides swore he saw Zac and Vanessa at the neighboring Four Seasons. Alas, the preteen information flow was wrong. Zac and his brother were staying at the Fairmont Kea Lani, and apparently having a great time. After all the flurry of possible Zac sightings, I had to ask Wendy Harvey who works with the Fairmont about their famous visitor.

Why do you think Zac decided to stay at the Fairmont? Zac and his girlfriend, Vanessa, had vacationed at The Fairmont Kea Lani about 3 years ago in a 2 bedroom oceanfront villa. They had a great time and even got certified in SCUBA diving. And, let's face it, the 1800 sq ft. villa with the private plunge pool just steps from Polo Beach is reason enough to return.

Was he easy to work with? I was blown away with how polite Zac was. He was very gracious and grateful and offered his assistance willingly. He wasn't demanding at all - there were no special requests for his villa or transportation.

Did he hide in his room? Quite the contrary - Zac could be seen all over the hotel. He went to Spa Kea Lani, had his hair cut at Juvenal's Hair Salon, ate at Ko Restaurant, Nick's Fishmarket, and at Caffe Ciao deli, he even cheerfully posed for photos with young guests. He also swam at the adults-only pool, and hung out in his pool cabana with his brother, Dylan.

Did he have a huge entourage? No. He traveled with his publicist and brother. However, there were several Maui Film Festival people escorting him places.

Anything surprise you about him? I think Zac is one of the most polite people I've ever met. There's not an ounce of pretentiousness in him. He is very respectful of others. For example, while at dinner at Ko, with a large group, he listened attentively and when someone would speak the same time as he did, he would stop and allow them to continue rather than dominate the conversation. He gave sincere thanks for the opportunities presented to him during the festival. He would go out of his way to acknowledge me as well as others he'd just recently met at festival events. Anyone can tell, he's also very fond of his brother. It seems he has a close family and parents who raised him right.
