Werewolf mythology:



-Werewolf appearance-


The wolves themselves vary in physical appearance, just like their human counterparts. “It was enormous—as tall as a horse, but thicker, much more muscular. The long muzzle grimaced, revealing a line of dagger-like incisors. A grisly snarl rolled out from between the teeth, rumbling across the clearing like a prolonged crack of thunder.”

It is also noticeable that the human boy changes significantly in areas other than height when they have become of an age to turn into a werewolf. Jacob crops his hair short, just like Sam and the others, but “The planes of his face seemed to have hardened subtly, tightened…aged. His neck and his shoulders were different, too, thicker somehow. His hands, where they gripped the window frame, looked enormous, with the tendons and veins more prominent under the russet skin.”

Uley Pack:




-Werewolf speed-


Like the vampires, werewolves are also superhuman in their ability to run.
Even in his human form, Jake seems to have developed more speed: “Then he turned and sprinted through the parking lot, across the road, and into the bordering forest. He flitted into the trees, swift and sleek as a deer.

As the wolves could catch Laurent it appears that they are even faster on their feet than the vampires are. Bella says: “I couldn’t imagine that—the wolves running faster than a vampire. When the Cullens ran, they all but turned invisible with speed.” It seems that speed is their real weapon, along with the exchange of thoughts within the pack.

Their reflexes are also immensely fast: “With stunning speed, Jacob yanked a can opener from the counter and launched it at Jared’s head. Jared’s hand flicked up faster than I would have thought possible, and he snagged the tool just before it hit his face.”






-Werewolf strength-


Their movement is in “powerful bounds” as a wolf, but also as a human there seems to be a difference in strength.

Part of the strength of a werewolf is that he (or she) is not a single entity, but part of a pack. They are stronger as a group than they would be alone. They communicate through the fact that they “hear each other’s thoughts, but only when you’re wolves” and during fights, like those we see at the end of ‘Eclipse’ they can alert each other of danger.




-Physiology-


The skin when they are in human form is “burning hot. Werewolves are clearly the polar opposites of the vampires, with their icy-cold touch and marble-like skin.
They are also able to heal very quickly physically. Injuries don’t last very long at all.

The actual transformation between human and werewolf is described in most detail in "New Moon’. Certainly the initial transformation is not an easy one. SM said - “The transformation into the wolf form is not a painful process, only disorienting and mentally uncomfortable.”

The transformation itself can happen at any time, and isn’t dependent upon a full moon. In young werewolves cases, they can change involuntarily because of lack of self-control.Werewolves are only created when there are neighbouring vampires, so that the Quileute land is always protected.

Their sense of pack-identity is strong. So much so that they are capable of hearing thoughts. Even in wolf form, they retain full control of their human minds. This means that all actions are knowing actions, although it is entirely possible for a werewolf to lose his temper and for him to be out of control as both a human and a wolf.
Werewolves were believed to be only male until the transformation of Leah Clearwater, which surprised everyone, even though “she’s a direct descendant, all right.”. The issue of imprinting is also critical as this is how the werewolf finds the one person they are destined to be with forever: “It’s not like love at first sight, really. It’s more like… gravity moves. When you see her, suddenly it’s not the earth holding you here anymore. She does. And nothing matters more than her.”
Their sense of smell has adjusted to help them identify their one enemy. It is not clear whether it is heightened in other circumstances, but they certainly know vampires from a distance and find the smell sickly sweet and repellent. Like vampires, they are also very strong; Bella breaks her hand punching Jake.

-Becoming a Werewolf-


The history of the Quileute tribe and their connection things beyond the human is documented in ‘Eclipse’. We are told that “there has always been magic in our blood” and that they were “spirit warriors” before they became “shape-shifting” people. The tale of Taha Aki links the tribe for the first time with the wolf, as his spirit shared the body of the animal. This seems to have been the beginning of the possibility of being beyond both simple man and simple wolf.
The description of Taha Aki matches what Bella discovers about Jacob and the other werewolves. “He led the tribe for many years, for he did not age” and the genetic passing on of the ability to transform to his sons “after they had reached the age of manhood.” It is important to note, that just as Jacob and his friends are different, the wolves in the story are different too, “because they were spirit wolves and reflected the man they were inside.”

If no vampires are near then “the descendants of Taha Aki no longer became wolves when they reached manhood”. If there are one of two vampires, then “the pack stayed small.” It is noticeable that when the number of vampires increase with Victoria’s army, then “the pack has grown” so that they are able to fight.
There is a direct connection between the vampires and the wolves. If vampires were not present, then there are no need for werewolves to protect the tribe.
To change into a werewolf, it is vital to be a direct descendant of Taha Aki. People had always believed that it was a direct male descendant, but this is proven to be untrue when Leah Clearwater becomes one of the pack. There is no escape from this.

There is “no exact age” that someone becomes a werewolf. Jacob explains that “Sometimes, if you get really upset or something, that can trigger it early” and that you need to be able to control your feelings and anger to be able to phase back again. With Sam, “it took him two weeks to calm down enough to change back” because no one had anticipated it would happen to him and “he thought he’d gone insane” as a result.
The pack has one leader; an alpha male. In Bella’s time, this should be Jake because of his lineage, but he explains: “I didn’t want to be some legendary chief. I didn’t want to be part of a pack of werewolves, let alone their leader. I wouldn’t take it when Sam offered.” Sam Uley leads them instead. The alpha does control the pack: “When he tells us to do something, or not to do something—when he really means it, well, we can’t just ignore him.”

-Imprinting-

When a shape-shifter imprints on a specific person, he becomes unconditionally bound to her for the rest of his life. When it happens, the experience is described as being gravitationally pulled toward that person while a glowing heat fills him; the connections of everything else become severed, or simply secondary, and only the imprintee is left to matter, leaving the shape-shifter with a deep need to do anything to please and protect the person.

Imprinting occurs only after a wolf's first phasing. It can happen with anyone, regardless of previous personal feelings. It happens the first time he sees the human object of his imprinting; if the shape-shifter does not react to a human subject the first time he sees them after he phases, that means he will never imprint on that human.



Imprinting can't be forced on anyone, no matter how much the shape-shifter may want it, as shown by Jacob Black when he tried numerous times to either imprint on Bella Swan or get over her. The same goes also for Leah Clearwater, who didn't go looking around the way Jacob did, but admitted to either wanting to imprint or be imprinted on. How imprinting will be for her is currently unknown because she is the first female wolf in their tribe's history.

What would happen if a wolf is rejected by his imprintee is also unknown, though this is assumed to be virtually impossible; the imprinter is deemed to be the "perfect match" to the imprintee; he will be anything she may want or need, making rejection unlikely. Should it happen, however, the imprinter may feel unspeakable pain.

It is implied that once a shape-shifter imprints he will be able spend the rest of his life aging alongside his imprintee once he is able to quit phasing. It is also implied that should the imprintee be long-living or immortal, the imprinter will live alongside her as long as he can phase regularly. It is unknown whether shape-shifters need to stop phasing and for how long before breeding.

The Black Pack

Jacob Black: Imprinted on Renesmee Cullen. He is the first to imprint on an immortal.

Leah Clearwater: It has been suggested that Leah will eventually leave pack life and maybe go to community college.

Seth Clearwater: Of the wolves Seth will most likely remain with Jacob for eternity since he likes the Cullen's and he loves being a werewolf.

Embry Call: It has not been suggested as to Embry's future.

Quil Atera: Imprinted on Claire Young, Emily's cousin. Will most likely remain with Jacob until Claire is of age when he then gives up pack life to be with her.

The Uley Pack

Sam Uley: Imprinted on Emily Young, Leah's second cousin. Will most likely give up pack life to grow old with Emily.

Jared Cameron: Imprinted on Kim, one of Jared's classmates. Will most likely give up pack life to grow up with Kim.

Paul Lahote: Imprinted on Rachel Black, Jacob's sister. After the vampire situation was under control, he wanted to be able to give up phasing so he he could travel with Rachel.

Brady Fuller: Turned at age 13.

Collin Littlesea: Turned at age 13. Remains loyal to Sam. Has a crush on Leah but he did not imprint on her.

Leah’s Story:

Born in 1986 to Harry and Sue Clearwater, Leah was your average teenage girl. She had dated Sam Uley for a while and was the happiest she could be until Sam started to shut her out and fell in love with her cousin Emily.

This confused Leah and she was hurt over the breakup, not being able to understand. After getting angry one night Leah phased for the first time. Her parents had come to expect such an outburst from their younger son, Seth so no one knew to look out for the signs where Leah was concerned. There had never, in the history of the pack, been a girl wolf before.

Leah’s phasing meant a huge change for all the boys in the pack. First and foremost was that nakedness came with the territory so the boys had seen her undressed on more than one occasion and had come to try not to and secondly now that Leah was part of the pack she understood Sam’s infatuation with Emily so therefore she could no longer be upset by the relationship. Third was that because she was the only she-wolf none of the boys could relate to her nor did they want to think about ‘girl stuff’ with her despite the shared brain thing.

Once Jacob left the pack, therefore creating his own Leah jumped at the opportunity and left Sam’s pack. She had to belong somewhere so she chose Jacob, becoming his second in command.

Leah still struggles with being a wolf. She considers herself a genetic dead end since no one has imprinted on her and with the lack of a menstrual cycle she is unsure if she’ll be able to have kids. Jacob has suggested that once she quits her wolf then things will ‘pick up again’. Leah isn’t quite sure but she’ll be ready to go back to being human again once she is able to do so unless she decides to continue staying on with the pack. ]

All wolves who change are descended from their great ancestor Taha Aki who was one of the first to share his body and soul with a wolf.






-Relations with the Cullens-



Ages ago since the Cullen’s came to hunt on Quileute lands, Ephrim Black and his pack, upon realizing that the ‘cold ones’ were different than most, had devised a treaty with each other. Boundaries were drawn up. The Quileute’s would remain on their lands, and the Cullen’s in their territory. Among the other rules of the treaty were that it went without saying that each would keep their secrets from outsiders and in terms of the vampires it would be against the treaty for any of them to bite a human.

With the arrival of the Cullen’s back in Forks it also brought out new wolves which hadn’t been seen for a generation since the time of Ephrim Black. The treaty remained without issue until Bella Swan and Edward Cullen began dating. This caused problems within the pack as Jacob had feelings for Bella and a deep distain for Edward. However the pack had no say in regards to Bella’s love life and so she went ahead and married Edward Cullen.

When Edward and Bella returned it was discovered that Bella was pregnant. This caused a new rift between the Cullen’s, the Pack, and now Jacob Black. While in wolf form the pack discussed the issue and it was Sam who ordered a strike on the Cullen’s however Jacob objected. As the rightful Alpha he was able to leave without being bound to Sam’s orders, forming his own pack, with Seth and Leah soon following him, and becoming a guard between Sam’s Pack and the Cullen’s.

Once more things between the Cullen’s and the two Packs changed when Jacob imprinted on Bella and Edward’s daughter, Renesmee. By Pack law, the brothers could no longer go after the Cullen’s or the new addition to the family as she had now become part of Jacob. And Sam’s Pack could not object Bella’s transformation as Jacob, as the rightful Alpha, had allowed it.

While the territories remain, Jacob and his pack now occupying the Cullen territory as two Alpha’s can’t live in the same area, they can share the lands. The wolves are able to come and go to the Cullen home as they please and vice versa. And now the Cullen’s, The Black Pack, and the Uley Pack all stand together as family.

Given that Jacob is the only one to imprint on an immortal, it is most likely that in the future he will inherit the children of his brothers once they become wolves and Jacob will train a whole new generation.
