Twilight - Twilight series : Book Mistakes

I thought it would be fun to talk about any mistakes or things that don't add up in the series, obviously taking into account that it is a fantasy story and many rules are broken. It is in no way a thread for bashing SM for any mistakes, they can happen and she is after all only human

Carlisle and the London Sewage System

OK, here is something that I noticed on my first read of Twilight, Edward is telling Bella about the early history of Carlisle and we find out that he was born in the 1640s.

Twilight page 289

He actually discovered a covern of true vampires that lived hidden in the sewers of the city.

This was when Carlisle was about to get bitten so it must have been around 1660-1670 no?. The mistake here is that at that time there was no way anybody could hide in the sewers of London because there weren't any. Sewage flowed openly down the middle of the streets untill it came to the river Thames. There were no tunnels. Only about two hundred years later and many outbreaks of Cholera did London get it's act together and charged Joseph Bazalgette to build a sewage system consisting of many interconnecting tunnels. It was built between 1859 and 1865. Many, many years later .

book mistakes huh?

yeah i have found some.

eclipse

when bella and jake meet for real the first time after the long break he tells her that it would have been priceless if sam had taken a mental picture of bella the night he found her in the woods so he could torture edward with it.

later, still the same evening, bella asks him what jake had thought about when he tortures edward at school. next to saying he thought about how bella had to hold herself together while she couldnt breathe thinking of edward when he had left her and telling her how lifeless she looked when she first came down to La Push he said that he thought about the night sam had found her in the woods. and that the whole pack knows what it had looked like.

so first he said he didnt have a pic but wanted one, later he said he used one.

eclipse again.

jake tells bella that he is exactly right for her and that they would have been together, that they were fate if there were no monsters and magic in the world.

according to twilight that isnt true. bellas fate without edward would have been to die in the car crash he saved her from.

I don't recall that part in Eclipse. I really need to read the books again.

Your second thing little_earthquake, I don't think that can really be called a book mistake. That's just something Jake said, it doesn't really have anything to do with the Twilight timeline or themes really.

I've noticed a couple of spelling mistakes and once a missed-out word

but I'd have to re-read the book quite carefully to tell you where they are now.

Hah! I love the thread idea.

I know I caught some printing errors in some of the books, but I just can't seem to remember.

Maybe I'll have to go back and look.

Interesting about the sewers.

I didn't even think of that, I was so caught up in the book.

it could be that it was just jake dreaming about how it could have been between them but its still not true. i dunno if SM actually thought about the van scene from twilight when she wrote it. i guess she got carried away.

page: 102 eclipse

jake: "I wish Sam had taken a picture when he'd found you that night last September. It would be exhibit A."

page: 128 eclipse

jake: "I was remembering the way you looked that night Sam found you - I've seen it in his head, and it's like I was there; That memeory has always haunted Sam, you know. And I remembered how you looked the first time you came to my place. I bet you don't realize what a mess you were then, Bella. It was weeks before you started to look human again. And I remembered how you always used to have your arms wrapped around yourself, trying to hold yourself together..."

see i dont think jake meant a picture taken with a camera in the first quote. we all know he is speaking of mental pics here. so i guess its a mistake.

but i cant remember if it was eclipse or new moon.

Franzi, I think that he was talking about an actual photograph in the first quote - him referring to it as being an 'exhibit' makes it sound as though it was a physical picture and not a mental one and it doesn't say anywhere that it was a mental picture.

And then the second quote is talking about a memory so I don't think it is a mistake.

The books are so amazing that you don't even notice the mistakes!

. it was just something i tripped over while reading the chapter.

and for me it didnt make any difference if he had had a real picture or if it was just a mental one since edward reads minds. so i thought he meant the memory in both scenes.

Even though I think that it is a physical picture, you're right that it's a bit weird and I can see why you've brought it up here - you would've thought Jacob wouldn't need to make that first comment at all if he knew he could do the second thing.

But maybe it was just a heat of the moment comment and then he thought about it later and thought "hmm... I don't have a physical picture, but I do have Sam's memory that I can think to Edward!"

exactly. plus he had already tortured edward with it. the school thing was before the talk, so the comment didnt make that much sense. the first one i mean.

but maybe .. just maybe.. he wanted a real picture so bella could see it? i mean the first sentence comes up when they talk about how she could forgive edward so easily. so maybe he wanted the real pic for her to see and how messed up the looked that night and he didnt think that much about edward in the moment? ..but i cant be sure. just a possibility.

This is just because I'm a Class of '08 Washingtonian that I know this.

"At home, only two years of P.E. were required. Here, P.E. was mandatory for all four years."

Actually, You're required to have 3 P.E. credits and 1 health in all Washington schools. That means One full year and a quarter of P.E. and a quarter of Health. Making it only 1 and a half of the two combined.
