I’d forgotten how much I really liked Jacob Black.
"Wait a sec—are you legal yet?"
Jacob was simply a perpetually happy person, and he carried that happiness with him like an aura, sharing it with whoever was near him. Like an earthbound sun, whenever someone was within his gravitational pull, Jacob warmed them. It was natural, a part of who he was. No wonder I was so eager to see him.
"I believe that… we have a date."
Jacob was waiting for me. My chest seemed to relax as soon as I saw him, making it easier to breathe.
"Jacob, you are absolutely, without a doubt, the most talented and wonderful person I know. You get ten years for this one."
"Bears don’t want to eat people. We don’t taste that good. Of course, you might be an exception. I bet you’d taste good."
"So are you going to be my Valentine? Since you didn’t get me a fifty-cent box of candy, it’s the least you can do."
"I told him you were planning to corrupt my youthful innocence."
He was my best friend. I would always love him, and it would never, ever be enough.
"As long as you like me the best. And you think I’m good-looking—sort of. I’m prepared to be annoyingly persistent."

There was nothing left in my life at this point that was more important than Jacob Black.

I knew that last glimpse of his face would haunt me until I saw him smile again.

As we walked, I felt myself settling into another version of myself, the self I had been with Jacob. A little younger, a little less responsible. Someone who might, on occasion, do something really stupid for no good reason.
Jacob had become a part of me, and there was no changing that now.
"I miss you every day, Bella. It’s not the same without you."
"Did you seriously just stamp your foot? I thought girls only did that on TV."
"But I’ll never see anyone else, Bella. I only see you. Even when I close my eyes and try to see something else."
"Does my being half-naked bother you?"
"What’s it like — having a werewolf for a best friend?"
"Hey, it’s the least I can do — I offered eternal servitude, remember. I’m your slave for life."
"I’m in love with you, Bella. Bella, I love you. And I want you to pick me instead of him. I know you don’t feel that way, but I need the truth out there so that you know your options. I wouldn’t want a miscommunication to stand in our way."
"You love me, too. Not the same way, I know. But he’s not your whole life, either. Not anymore. Maybe he was once, but he left. And now he’s just going to have to deal with the consequence of that choice — me."
While he slept, every trace of defensiveness and bitterness disappeared and suddenly he was the boy who had been my very best friend before all the werewolf nonsense had gotten in the way. He looked so much younger. He looked like my Jacob.
"You could kiss me, for example. I don’t mind if you want to use me to experiment."
Jacob was right. He’d been right all along. He was more than just my friend. That’s why it was so impossible to tell him goodbye — because I was in love with him. Too. I loved him, much more than I should, and yet, still nowhere near enough. I was in love with him, but it was not enough to change anything; it was only enough to hurt us both more. To hurt him worse than I ever had.
It made no difference that Jacob was not human when he cried out. I needed no translation.
"I’m exactly right for you, Bella. It would have been effortless for us — comfortable, easy as breathing. I was the natural path your life would have taken… If the world was the way it was supposed to be, if there were no monsters and no magic…"
"I would have been healthier for you. Not a drug; I would have been the air, the sun."
"How can we be friends, when we love each other like this?"
"I probably won’t think she’s good enough for you. I wonder how jealous I’ll be."
"I’ll always be waiting in the wings, Bella. You’ll always have that spare option if you want it."

I'm still trying to convince my "Like me in every way except that she ships EB" buddy to read the books, she only ships EB 'cause of the film, I'm certain her thinking would alter if she read the original material.

Particularly NM obviously.

We all get that from Jacob, eh? He showed us how to be annoyingly persistent. Hee.

And many people decide that they ship EB and hate Jacob immediately after reading the first book.

Which I totally dont get. A friend of mine has just read Twilight, watched the movie, and read one third of NM, and she's sure she's all EB and has decided that she hates JB. And, Im all like...

I just dont get it.

All I can say about EB in Twilight is that they're not at their most terrible in that book, still pretty awful though IMO.

I confess to not understanding how one couldn't like J/B just a teeny bit in NM, even if just as friends.

Look how happy he made her, how he made her laugh, made her smile. Basically saved her from being a total wreck and held her in one piece.

And they have so much fun together, it's so cute!

I kinda agree with you, even I liked the pull between them and how it was the forbidden kind of attraction, but after pages and pages of cheesy dialogue, sickening retarded staring and their disgusting, gut-wrenching touching, blech...I knew I couldnt tolerate them. Mostly cuz they just never touched my heart. It was that simple.

Its beyond my comprehension how Jacob is the most hated character in the series.

I can see its only cuz he loved Bella, and even more so cuz she loved him back.

JB were so adorable on so many levels in NM.

Thats why its my favorite book, even though Eclipse is better. NM had the more sweet and heartwarming stuff, their journey of falling in love, Bella's healing through Jake.

Their banter was so great, such a welcome break from the laughable dialogue that EB had.

Bella had never been so alive than when she was with Jacob.

And you could see that Jacob's happiness was in seeing her happy, in knowing that he could make Bella happy. Like his pain was hers, her joy was his too.

That's why, overall, I like NM best too. Because it was where JB's journey really started and we got to witness them falling in love step by step.

They were totally gone for each other by the end of NM, no matter how hotly Bella denied it, the "His pain, my pain" scene proved it beyond any doubt.

She was in love with him long before that though. She just didnt let herself even consider the possiblity that she had healed. She hung on to her bitter memories so bad, that she never even stopped to actually see that it was getting better. So true,

They were so connected, in ways incomprehensible even to the magical creatures in the books. They were natural, and real yet something about them was so untouchable, something which even EB didnt have, the comfort, the understanding and the sense of belonging. The feeling of being home.

Totally.

Just loving her, being with her, making her whole and happy was enough. Oh Jake, how I love you so.

The scene after the movie in NM was so good, when he said that as long as she liked him better than Mike and enjoyed being with him, then that was enough for him. He just wanted to be with her even if at that point neither of them thought she could love him back.

And his "I'll never hurt you" speech, oh my.

And the best thing was that he was so unaware of how adorable he really was.

He thought it sounded corny (well, he hadnt heard E talk

)

He was so good for Bella.

He'd lost his mother when he was young, so he understood pain, he supported his father, so he understood responsiblity, but he was a kid, and that was the best thing cuz he knew how to have fun, and get Bella to let go, and be herself.

And the wolf part of him had quite a few advantages too.

I was flicking through the chapter Pressure in NM earlier, and I adore the bit when they escape to the Rabbit to talk and he leaned over so that his cheek was resting on top of her head, I can just imagine that and it's so adorable.

And then when she started getting achy he stroked her hair and was all "It's okay, Bella, it's okay. I'm sorry."

"We're a pretty messed up pair, aren't we? Neither one of us can hold our shape together right."

And that's another reason they were perfect together.

I love little details like that.

I loved that little high-five when he entwined his fingers through hers, loved how he stroked her hair, loved how he put his cheek against her head, how right it felt for them to be holding hands, how when she got sad, he'd easily pull her into his lap, how she clung to him, like she couldnt make herself let go of the heat and him.... *is rambling*

Sometimes I really thought he could read her mind.

He really was her soulmate, he was a part of her, and he fit in where no one else could. She could try and fill that space up, but it wouldnt happen. No one could take Jake's place in her heart. Thats why it broke me that she let go of him. She would never be complete again.

I loved all the unconcsious gestures between them - holding/hugging each other, hair stroking, hand holding - it was so natural for them. To outsiders they must have totally came off as a couple, Jared even referred to her as Jake's girlfriend and she didn't deny it.
