What Were the 80's Like in Your Country?

It occurred to me that much of my image of the 1980's is based on my own experience as an American. So many of the movies, fads, and music I consider 80's originated from the US.

I know we have folks from many different countries on this board, and I'm really curious what the 80's were like in other places in the world. Was Madonna cutting-edge fashion in your country? Did you go through a punk-rock phase (didn't this originate in England?) Was Molly Ringwald popular? Please share!

Something that was huge in Sweden was the 'Eurodisco' music, like Modern Talking, Sandra and Falco to mention a few. The term comes from the fact that the artists/groups were from the European main continent (several but far from all from Germany).

I remember Falco quite well. I loved Rock Me Amadeus and Vienna Calling. That's very true. "Eurodisco" made its way to the states.

Did you get many American tv sitcoms?

Some, Roseanne and Cosby for example.

There are other things I missed out on though, like SNL.

One thing I've always wondered is whether dubbed tv shows (or movies) end up being as funny as in the original language. A few of my friends in Europe prefer to watch American movies in English, rather than the dubbed versions.

It's nice to know Cosby has a universal appeal

I have always wondered that too? I've had my doubts though.

TV-series and movies aren't dubbed here. Some exceptions might be cartoons targetted at younger kids because they aren't old enough to read the subtitles or understand English yet.

To me, nothing can compare to the original voices.

Good idea, Z. I want to hear more about how it was for everyone.

What were the 80's like in my country? A lot of misplaced paranoia about the Soviet Union (cold war movies were everywhere - Red Dawn, anyone? Please.), big hair, big bangs, heavy metal, punk rock, Madonna clothes. Later in the 80's, it became about greed and wealth and an obsession with economic status.
