Something Wicked This Way Comes(1983) - Enter Mr. Dark's Carnival!

This is as dark as Disney gets. "Something Wicked This Way Comes" was a Disney film based on the book by Ray Bradbury, who also penned the script. The movie centers around a small town in the early 20th century. A mysterious carnival blows into town runned by the equally mysterious Mr. Dark(Jonathan Pryce). Two young local boys soon learn that Dark and his carnival grant the townsfolks wishes to come true, but it comes at a horrible price. Jason Robards, Diane Ladd, and Pam Grier also star.

This is a dark and stylish Disney thriller. I remember it creeping me out as a kid. Some say it isn't "horror" enough for that crowd, and not as "family friendly" enough as usual Disney fare. It's a weird combination that is one of the most daring experiments Disney has ever done. The tone, the sets, the era, etc. It's all well done. One of the best movies Disney has ever made in my opinion.

This movie is amazing! :D I loved the book and bought the movie very soon after reading it. It's probably one of the most faithful book to movie adaptations I've seen (no suprise considering Bradbury's input). It's a great thriller of a movie and the characters are perfectly cast I think.
Thanks for the thread Barry.

You're welcome!.

Unfortunatley, this movie was nowhere to be found where I live. I looked everywhere. I just ordered it. It's already on it's way. I can't wait to get it!. It's such a good movie. Everyone, especially Pryce and Robards, are so great in it. I never read the book, but I am going to have to find it. :)

I was notified that my DVD will be arriving next Thursday. Can't wait.

Has anyone else seen or heard of this one?

CatFoley16 04-09-2010 02:28 PM

:yay: for your copy coming next Thursday! :D The book's really popular, I'm sure it'll be easier to find than the DVD. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on that too.
And yeah, anyone else heard of this movie? :flowers:

Now it'll be here on Wednesday!. Lol.

I guess it's just us. The movie didn't fare well at the box office and is kind of obscure in a way. It's too bad. I wished there was more love for this movie.

Yay!. My DVD came 3 days early!. I can't wait to watch it!.

CatFoley16 04-12-2010 04:22 PM

Yay! :D Maybe I'll rewatch my copy again soon and that'll give us more to talk about.

Barrybgb 04-13-2010 09:14 AM

I'll be watching it tonight!. :)

Getting to be that time soon to drag this one out. I've only watched my copy once. It's not a Halloween movie, but it's great for that time of season.

Been in the mood to watch this one since the passing of Ray Bradbury. It's quite an intriguing film and something very dark for Disney.

CatFoley16 06-23-2012 01:44 PM

I didn't think of this lately with his death but I did read a collection of his stories starting on the day of his passing. I hadn't heard about it until after I'd started so it was interesting.
It's definitely an intriguing film. I rewatched it a few months ago, maybe around Halloween. Bradbury's stuff is always so universal and full of good ideas you can read/watch them anytime and see something new, at least I think so. :)

I would have to agree with that statement, Jenny. Lol.

The only other Bradbury movie I saw was "Fahrenheit 451" in school.
