^ That's usually true. A lot of geeks are portrayed as mousy and cowardly. I like that John Hughes added substance to the dorky, geeky, brainy characters like Duckie, Farmer Ted, and Brian (The breakfast Club). That they weren't the typical nerds is what made them standouts, at least for me.

Very true. They just weren't "surface" characters, you know what I mean? Especially Brian. There were deep, dark issues there.

Andie had a pretty hard life. Her mother left. Her dad gave up on everything. She went to school with a bunch of rich kids.

I love this movie. I agree, the Dad probably did get unemployment. They had to have some kind of help to get by. Its funny they don't address those things in a movie of tv show sometimes.
