(Preoccupied with) 1985 - It's a song about us!

Have you heard this song by Bowling for Soup? I heard it for the first time on the radio a few days ago. It's totally child-of-the-eighties material! Look at these lyrics!

1985
Bowling for Soup

Woo-hoo-hoo

Woo-hoo-hoo

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husband's a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty four
Only been with one man
What happen to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of White Snake's car
Her yellow SUV, is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing, has been, alright

Since Bruce Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2, and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids, in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
But she still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woo-hoo-hoo

1985

Woo-hoo-hoo

She's seen all the classics
She knows every line
Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink
Even St. Elmo's Fire
She rocked out to Wham
Not a big Limp Biscuit fan
Thought she'd get a hand
On a member of Duran Duran

Where's the mini-skirt made of snake skin?
And who's the other guy singing in Van Halen?
When did reality, become T.V.?
What ever happen to sitcoms, game shows?

On the radio was

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2, and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids, in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
But she's still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woo-hoo-hoo

She hates time, make it stop
When did Motley Crue become classic rock?
And when did Ozzy become an actor?
Please make this stop!
Stop!
Stop!

And bring back

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2, and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids, in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
But she's still preoccupied
With 1985

Bruce Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2, and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids, in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
But she's still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

I haven't heard it yet, but boy do I really want to.

The lyrics are so me! Hysterical!

That song cracks me up every time I hear it. There's another one, a country song by a guy (I forget who), that talks about 1970-something and 1980-something, and that one makes me laugh too, because it talks about rearranging the stickers on the Rubik's Cube.

That would be "Nineteen Something" by Mark Wills.

The part that talks about the 80s goes:

It was the dawning of a new decade,
We got our first microwave,
Dad broke down and finally shaved them old sideburns off.
I took the stickers off a-my Rubik's cube.
Watched MTV all afternoon.
My first love was Daisy Duke in them cut-off jeans.
Space shuttle fell out of the sky.
And the whole world cried.

Well, it was nineteen-eighty-something,
In the world that I grew up in.
Skatin' rinks and black Trans-Ams.
Big hair and parachute pants.
An' lookin' back now I can see me.
Oh man, did I look cheesy.
I wouldn't trade those days for nothin':
Oh, it was nineteen-eighty-something.

Ain't that the truth? There was an energy about the 80's and it hasn't been the same since.

I haven't heard that song yet, I hope I hear it soon!

Hee.

Time for confession: I never managed to solve the Rubik's cube. Well, not more than two colours anyhow. And I almost demilitioned my cube by taking apart some of the pieces.

Actually, it's been out for at least two years, I think. Mostly, it's been played on country stations.

Here's a song that's a bit more "my time" (sorry!) Something Corporate, Babies of the 80's

I grew up on five-alive
And transformers and slip-n-slide
Toy's R Us and Chuck-e-Cheeze
Disco out and techno in
to synthesize my favorite sin
And here I am on my knees
To get it back again

Babies of the 80's
Little girls in lycra shorts
Tented beds, nerf contact sports
My babies of the 80's
Shout it out just one more time
For the generation that was all mine

We learned to crawl on linoleum floors
Ronald Regan fought Star Wars
But he'll never be Han Solo
Students march Tienemen Square
They took him out hey that's not fair
Dad said it's good to be free
As we watched from our T.V.

Babies of the 80's
Little girls in lycra shorts
Tented beds, nerf contact sports
My babies of the 80's
Shout it out just one more time
For the generation that was all mine

We watched the wall fall down
Woke up early for Bozo the clown
MTV and Nick at Night
And I slept for the first time
Without the light
without the light
without the light

My Babies of the 80's
Little girls in jelly shoes
got the ferris bueller blues
My babies of the 80's
yes we could be something after all
Who knew yes we could be something after all
Who knew yes we would be something after all
Who Knew

This thread is so much fun. I love seeing all the nostalgic lyrics, and it's fun discussing them.

The line about Ronald Reagan and Star Wars reminds me of the line from one of (can't recall which one) the Back to the Future movies, where pastDoc is stunned because the actor Ronald Reagan has become president in the future.

Wouldn't that be the first movie, then? The one where McFly goes back to save his family?

That line from Back To The Future always made me laugh. I love how Marty keeps saying stuff is "heavy" and Doc asks him if there's a problem with the gravity in his time, too.

There's that word again, "heavy." In 1985 is there some sort of problem with the earth's navigational pull?

Back on topic, I'm really enjoying this thread as well. All these lyrics are bringing back memories - little things I forgot and do appreciate. I wonder if children of the 90's have as strong memories of those years and trends.

Great line:

Ronald Reagan fought Star Wars
But he'll never be Han Solo

I think I'll take that as my siggy line

I like this quote from Nineteen Something:
Quote:
Big hair and parachute pants.
An' lookin' back now I can see me.
Oh man, did I look cheesy.
It's so true. I looked cheesy.

As an 90's child (despite being an 80's baby), I can say that I think we do, even if it's not yet coupled with wide-spread nostalgia yet. Some of the things I remember from the 90's are:

SeaQuest (1993-1994 (DSV) and 1995 (2030))
Nirvana (and "grunge" fashion (flannel, etc))
Kurt Cobain's suicide
advent of the World Wide Web
Disney's quality decreases dramatically
getting my first CD player
Oregon Trail
boybands
Hanson
Girl Power
Lilith Fair
Road Rules (and Real World, I guess, but I never "got" the concept and now it's just tacky)
Columbine High massacre
Fern Gully (Human tales? Humans don't have tails! They have big, big bottoms that they wear with bad shorts, and they walk around going "Hi, Helen!)
umm... okay, I can't recall if there's a 90's version of the Brat Pack. When was American Pie made?

That's just off the top of my head, and off-topic, too, now that I think about it.

See? That's why I'm happy I didn't turn 10 until the 90's. Under 10, you're allowed to look as cheesy as you wish!
