80's Movie and TV DVD Info - We're Anxiously Waiting!

Saw we lost the last thread and Gavin posted some great news that needs to be shared.

Quote:
The bitchin' 80's are back!" MGM Home Entertainment has just announced another wave of catalog classics to go along with their super-swell August lineup of horror faves (see April 18 update). What's in this new batch? How about some of the most highly-anticipated teen comedies yet to hit the format? Can't wait!

On August 5th comes new special editions of Valley Girl and The Sure Thing. The former is way-loaded with extras: a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 remix, no less than 3 new commentaries (video commentary with members of the cast, audio commentary by director Martha Coolidge and an 80's text trivia track), three featurettes ("Valley Girl: 20 Totally Tubular Years Later," "In Conversation: Martha Coolidge and Nicholas Cage" and "The Music of Valley Girl"), storyboard-to-film comparisons, original music videos from Modern English and The Plimsouls, and trailers. The Sure Thing also includes a nice set of specs: 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 remix, audio commentary with director Rob Reiner, text trivia track, four featurettes: "The Road to The Sure Thing," Casting The Sure Thing," "Dressing The Sure Thing" and "Reading The Sure Thing," and trailers. Retail is a mere $19.95 each.

Also included in this August 5th lineup are more 80's classics, sorta-classics and not-quite-so-classics, in a variety of aspect ratios. Thrashin', The Rachel Papers, Adrian Lyne's Foxes and, at long last, The Last American Virgin all include new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers and Dolby Digital 2.0 surround tracks (Foxes is mono only). Thrashin' also includes a featurette and "Freestylin' Montage." The Matt Dillon comedy The Flamingo Kid is presented in non-anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen, while Johnny Be Good, Hot Dog The Movie, Bright Lights Big City and the originalBreakin' are presented in (sigh) full screen only. All include trailers, and retail is $14.95 each.

I for one am very excited!!

Great news.

There's a bunch of John Hughes movies I want on DVD, so I desperatly need some money. I just had a quick look at Amazon, and I realised I'd order more than I could afford if I didn't leave quickly.

Thanks for restarting the thread.

Judd posted this on the Freaks and Geeks board. I almost had a heart attack when I saw it.

We are currently in discussions about how to get this done. The 20,000 signatures made a huge difference! It is still tough, but we are closer than we have ever been and I am hammering away. Thank you for all the hard work. IT WILL GET DONE.

Found some more and i'm flipping out!!

Example No. 1,348 of why DVD going mainstream is cool: the studios will now release even the most embarrassing pieces of crap in their libraries if they think they can make even a few bucks off of it at Walmart. So let's give much thanks and praise to Universal Studios Home Video this year, who have suddenly realized that there is many a bad movie lover out there who would gladly shell out $15 bucks to own an anamorphic widescreen copy of Jaws 3.

Just announced from these fine purveyors of fabulous 80's dreck (really, what other studio would have released Xanadu, Hard to Hold and Sgt. Pepper's Hearts Club Band in a mere five-year period?) comes a rather nice assortment of summer DVD releases. First up on July 1st is Matt LeBlanc's failed comedy Ed and Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs, plus a trio of sports-themed comedies and dramas: John Goodman in The Babe, Mr. Baseball, and The Dream Team. Retail is $14.95 each, and all include new anamorphic widescreen transfers and Dolby Digital 2.0 surround tracks (Ed is in full 5.1), plus trailers.

But wait, there is even more on August 12th: The Beatles "what if?" biopic Backbeat, Roger Moore's action-comedy with the funny name, Fflokes, Michael J. Fox in For Love or Money, the early Ashley Judd starrer Kuffs, Playing for Keeps, the utter disaster Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (yes, that Bee Gees movie), Anthony Edwards in the much- beloved Gotcha!, Marlon Brando's The Ugly American and The Night of the Following Day, and last but certainly not least, the incomparable Rick Springfield rock classic Hard to Hold. All retail for $14.95 each, are presented in new anamorphic widescreen (except Backbeat, which is strangely full frame) and Dolby 2.0 surround (For Love or Money also includes Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 include trailers. And to think... For Love or Money even includes a DTS track!

Then there's even a couple of genuine great movies in this August 12th bunch: Steven Spielberg's oft-postponed Duel (same specs as previously announced) and a new special edition of Peter Bogdonavich's Mask, starring Cher and Eric Stoltz, complete with a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby 5.1 surround track and commentary by Bogdonavich, plus deleted material and the trailer. Retail for these babies is $19.95 each.
Okay, I Rick Springfield and I love that movie!!! This just made my night.

Okay, this is a must buy for me. The movie is awesome, and Eric Stoltz is great.

Speaking of movies from the '80s, I bought Highlander today. Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery are two of my favourite men. Yeah, anything with a major factor will do for me. I love the music in this movie, too.

Oh, I know what you mean.

Did you all know that Curly Sue is coming to DVD on July 1? Hehe. I used to love that one.

Thanks for all the news, Stacy.

Maxi I used to love Christopher Lambert. Loved him in the Tarzan movie.

Hey Adria! Yep, Hard to Hold is a great movie. I love when she is dancing around in her office and having a great time. And then when he shows up in his white navy outfit. Such a cute movie.

Your welcome Mel. I love Curly Sue and Mask too! Great movie. I agree. Eric was amazing in that movie.

Money issues have prevented me from buying much lately.

And the list of things I want keep growing.

I sure know about the growing list.

Between summer, the August party, the DC auction, i'm going so broke and I don't have a job. Going to call around tomorrow though.

Added My Chaffeur (sp?) I think that was an 80s movie. I used to love Deborah Foreman. Sad she stopped acting.
