the amount of cosmetic surgery, the cosmetic surgery he did do, or whatever he did to try preserve his youthful look was just extreme, time just does not stand still for anyone

He was one of the hardest working people in showbusiness in the 70s, and 80s. Yes he was vain (a lot of people in showbusiness are) the thing was- his vanity took over him

I don't think MJ was changing his looks because he was vain about himself. He was mentally and emotionally abused by his father who teased him about his nose being too big when he was a fragile teenager and he said when he looked in the mirror, he feared he would end up looking more and more like his father, the abuser. And he knew the press would write about his appearance cause he wasn't a cute child anymore.

Then it all just got worse as he kept trying to distance his looks from his family more and more and I think he developed a mental illness about how his appearance. I don't think he even believed he was ever good looking.

Vain people think they look so awesome they try to improve things even more.

EDIT - With regards to vanity, David Bowie was vain, but he used his vanity to push his art forward, that is proof you can be vain for a reason. Im fairly sure David Bowie, or any artist for that reason would have sold a whole lot less, been far less prominent if there wasnt an image associated with the work
