Wikipedia aptly describes Savage’s gimmick as “a crazed, egomaniacal bully who would mistreat Miss Elizabeth and threaten anyone who even looked at her.” In retrospect, the 1980s’ WWF seems to embody a moment of naive American innocence—as if, drunk on our own power, we were lured into the narcissistic notion that there was nothing more serious to worry about than how George “The Animal” Steele had looked at Miss Elizabeth. It was a time of excess—big sunglasses and bigger hair. And a time whose hubris seemed validated by the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, and with it the apparent crumbling of our only real adversary—once an afterthought, now dismissed entirely. There was perhaps no better metaphor for America in the ’80s than The Macho Man, whose ubiquitous catchphrase was “Ohh yeeaah”—a phrase entirely devoid of meaning, perfect for a time that didn’t need any. TMZ reports that The Macho Man passed away today after suffering a heart attack while driving his Jeep. Savage is survived by his wife, who was in the car, but who suffered only minor injuries. He was 58. Source: TMZ __________________ Victor: "Wait. I made a promise" The Corpse Bride: "You kept your promise. You set me free. Now I can do the same for you" ![]() ![]() Jenny | |||
