My personal opinion: The reboot show can never beat the original McGyver show.
The 80s show was the best.

The short answer is: It’s up to Richard Dean Anderson. The longer answer, however, is that showrunner Peter M. Lenkov does have a role for the original MacGyver, if and when Anderson wants it. “He’s being very kind to us because he’s allowing us to step out of the gate on our own,” Lenkov says. “Hopefully, after we get up and running, he’ll come and join us. That’s what I’m hoping. We have a role, and it’s a great role. It’s recurring and I’m hoping he says yes to it.” The only thing Lenkov would say about the role itself is that it’s not the owner of a paper clip shop, so… fingers crossed he’s the owner of a chewing gum specialty store.

Mmh I`m not so sure about that. But that´s just my personal opinion.
I remember the statement from July that he wrote on his page where he said no to that. Why would he change his mind?

I remember that as well. He said fans expect a certain thing and this wasn't their show. It was for a new audience or something like that. I respect that. When shows come back, fans want to see their favorite people. Not new actors they don't know.

One of the things about these reboots are that these shows from the 80s came from a time with a distinct look, feel and so on. That is something that is every part of what makes the show and what makes it special to you. Making a new show and just keeping the idea and slapping the title on it isn't always going to cut it. Something special is always missing.
