Claire and Andy were probably friends before they ended up in detention. That might be why they seemed close.

I don't know if Claire and Andy were actually friends before detention, but they seemed to imply that they ran in the same social circles. Wasn't there a scene where Andy asked Claire if she was going to so-and-so's party? Also, Claire made a comment to the others that they don't understand the pressures of having friends like "Andy and I do". It sounded like they had mutual friends, but maybe weren't actually friends themselves.

i don't think that andy and claire really knew each other. like you said, probably in passing but that was most likely the only way they knew who each other was.
