This was a show that me and my family would get together for and watch when it was on at 6 or 6:30.

It was also one of the first shows, that I remember anyway, to introduce gay characters. And it dealt with a lot of the same issues that every day families dealt with, it was a reality style show in its own way because everyone could relate to it!

I remember when Roseanne announced there would be a gay character. It was so controversial at the time. There was also much talk about who it would be. A lot of people speculated it would be Darlene. Roseanne said no to that. She felt that just because a teenager wore black clothing and was moody, it did not mean she was gay. I don't think anyone thought it would Nancy.

I agree that you could relate to Roseanne. They had problems that real families had. We owe a lot of that to Roseanne herself. She fought hard to make the show what it was. They wanted to make up stupid jokes and Roseanne always stood up for the show. She wouldn't let them turn it into a crap show.

I forgot Nancy was the gay character, but Martin Mull's character was also gay.
