Back To Our Future - How The 1980s Explain The World We Live In Now

I got this from Twitter and ReTweeted it, but I thought it's great to put here. Cool article.

In 'Back to Our Future,' the '80s are alive and, well ... - USATODAY.com

The 80s can't be denied!

I figure this thread could also be used to just talk about things then compared to now, that doesn't fit into any other thread.

Interesting article.

My brothers had Atari. They played with it all the time. Video games have come a long way. Not sure if I agree that playing games now is a solitary thing.

I'm not in the gaming world, so I have no idea about any of that. Lol.

It's interesting when you think about it. A lot of things that are normal now, that we take for granted as always being there, really got started in the 80s. Home computers, cell phones, video games, home video, MTV, music videos, the whole mall culture, etc....

I'm not either, but I know that a lot of my kids go to each other's houses to play games.

That's true, and people say the 80s sucked. Well, they need to realize what you said.

A lot of people who say that didn't live it. Have absolutely no idea. What will they think when their kids say that their generation, or decade, sucked? It will come back to them.

I always get worked up over that kind of stuff. Lol. I mean, it's not surprising. The next generation always thinks the one before it sucked because it's not theirs. Sadly, it seems like every generation is getting dimmer and dimmer.

I agree that it's very annoying. I don't like it when people badmouth the 80s.

Oh yeah, things haven't gotten better in some cases.

Kids don't seem to do anything nowadays. They don't seem like kids. I never wanted to be the one to always say "Kids today!" Lol. But I can't help it! Back in the day, the teens would always cruise the main street downtown every Friday night. It would be bumper to bumper. Music blaring. Horns honking. Kids hanging out the window. There just isn't stuff like that anymore.

Nope, there isn't.

Kids are caught up in computers, iPod, cell phone, etc.

I have taken several cellphones from my students. Why does a 6-year-old need a cellphone?

I saw one mother on the "Today" show talking about cell phones and kids. She took her son's cell phone away and he said "Mom, without my cell phone I have no life."

I thought that was really scary.

I see no reason for kids that young to have a cell phone. Another "Today" show moment had this poll. I don't remember the age or percentage, but it showed more young kids of a certain age knew how to download an app, but didn't know how to tie their own shoes.

That is ridiculous! OMG!

I'm shaking my head. We lived w/out cell phones at 6 years old. They can, too.

It's just shocking.

My kids wouldn't have a cell phone until they were old enough to pay for it on their own! Lol.
