Danny Tanner needs some help around the house after his wife passes away, so his best friend Joey, and his brother-in-law Jesse, move into the house. Jesse, a rock musician, and Joey, a wannabe comic, are almost as mature as the girls; Michelle, Stephanie and D.J. Now they're one big family, trying to live under one roof. The series ran from 1987 to 1995; 192 episodes.

Ohhhh boy, this brought back memories. I used to love watching this show when I was a kid. I remember we used to call it "the Michelle show," which could explain how Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have a huge empire now. This was such a fun, funny show when it aired, but does it hold up?

Warner Bros announced this as a 2 disc set, then recently changed it to 4 discs. It's the same content because the 2 discs were going to be double-sided, but the booklet still mentions 2 discs. The trays inside the case hold two discs each, so the discs overlap. The booklet with the set lists 2 discs, with sides A and B, but I'm sure you'll be able to figure out which episodes are on which discs.

This set is part of Warner Televisions 50th anniversary celebration. It includes a bonus DVD, and a mail-in rebate when you purchase other Warner TV sets this year. The offer is open in the US and Canada (look inside the box for more information).

Video


Full House, like many other sitcoms, was shot on video instead of film. The result is a soft picture, but one that is free from grain and dust that plagues filmed shows. The colors are fine, and the show probably looks as good as when it first aired. Each disc contains a "play all" feature, but there aren't any chapters in the episodes.

Audio


Warner Bros has included an English Dolby Digital Mono track for the release. It does a decent job reproducing the audio from the show, but it's just a mono track, and isn't anything to get excited over. I found my sub got a workout on the opening to the show, and I found the thumping to be slightly annoying (it doesn't last long though). The dialog is easy to understand, which means Joey's impressions are crystal clear, and Danny's voice is annoying. There are English, French and Spanish subtitles.

Extras - How we rate extras


Commentary Tracks
Creator/executive producer/writer Jeff Franklin provides commentary on two episodes, "Our Very First Show" and "Mad Money." These are both interesting tracks, though he repeats himself in the "Mad Money" commentary. These are both interesting tracks, though he repeats himself in the "Mad Money" commentary. Original Unaired Pilot (26:55)
Wow, a less-annoying Danny Tanner! John Posey plays Danny in this unaired pilot. A very nice addition to the DVD set.

"House of Trivia" on The Miracle of Thanksgiving
The audio on this is messed up; the dialog comes from the left speaker, while music comes from the center. Bits of trivia pop up on the screen throughout the episode. I was amazed at some of the facts they let us in on.

Bonus DVD With Episodes
Warner Bros is bundling bonus DVDs with some of their titles in celebration of Warner Televisions 50th anniversary. Full House: Season 1 contains Volume 4, consisting of Growing Pains: "Jealousy" and Step By Step: "Pilot." These are bonus episodes, not previews of sets they'll be releasing. There will be 15 bonus DVDs released throughout the year; collect them all!

Summary


I'll be honest; this show drives me NUTS now! Bob Sagat is so annoying, Dave Coulier drives me crazy, and the stories are so sappy they make me want to gag. As Uncle Jesse would say, "Have Mercy!" I found it extremely difficult to get through these episodes, so I skipped around on the discs (forgive me). I thought I may have a problem watching the show, but I didn't think it would be this bad. If you're a fan of Full House, please don't yell at me; I used to love the show, but I grew out of it. There are shows that should be left as memories, and this is one of them, at least for me.

Warner Bros put together a good set, and current fans will pick this up. It was interesting to see John Posey playing Danny Tanner (far less annoying), and the commentary tracks were very informative. If you were young when you watched this show then you may want to rent it before adding it to your collection.

Anyway, I thought the movie Labyrinth was a cool movie. I think they need to bring more 80's movies to dvd. I'm not a dvd fan, but I still think that too many movies/tv shows from the 80's are ignored and not put on dvd while current shows are put on to dvd. I think older stuff ('80's) should be available on dvd first. Just my opinion.
