Early Career:

Farrell's life in Sydney 7th July, 2003 - News.com.au network

He may be one of Hollywood's hottest stars but when Colin Farrell was in Sydney in 1995, he was just like thousands of other Irish backpackers who blow through town. He waited on tables, crashed on people's couches, spent a lot of time at Bondi Beach and toyed with the idea of trying to break into acting. Now with the moniker of "the lusty leprechaun", Farrell is a highly sought-after actor - both on and off the screen.

Farrell came to Sydney in 1995 and it was here that he made his stage debut, and a highly forgettable one at that. But those who remember him as a 19-year-old tourist are not surprised at his success.

Photographer Stuart Campbell met Farrell through a mutual friend and ended up giving him a place to stay when he first arrived in Sydney.

"He slept on my couch in Bondi for a few nights," Mr Campbell recalled. "Colin mentioned that he wanted to be an actor so I offered to take his pictures. "He was totally, absolutely charming."

While shooting the snaps at the old Colgate Palmolive factory in Balmain, Campbell introduced Farrell to NIDA head of acting Tony Knight, who pointed him in the direction of Performance Space.

He landed the role of Steve Hart in Kelly's Reign, a play about the life and times of Ned Kelly and his gang.

Girls who had the pleasure of being served by Farrell when he was waiting tables still treasure some very fond memories.

"I knew from the day I met him that he was different from the rest," one girl said.

"He just oozes with sexuality for a guy who was only 18 or 19 years old. A few girls from work went ga-ga over him - and ladies as well."

Quotes: courtesy of colinfarrell.net

-(On his childhood) ''I got away with murder. I pulled off the smoking thing for years. When they finally caught me with cigarettes I told them I was holding them for a friend.''

-"After I go to work you think I'm at home learning my lines or something. Na, you work hard and play hard and you always get six weeks off between jobs and that's great. I have no politics except to enjoy every second of my life as much as possible."

-"Being Irish is very much a part of who I am. I take it everywhere with me."

-(On people who drink tequila) "I tell them, 'When you're at home puking your guts out, I'll be here drinking my Amstel Light.'"

-(On appearing nude in Tigerland) "I couldn't care less about who sees my bits ... My friends asked how I could do scenes like that and not get excited, but it wasn't like that. My bits looked the size of a cashew nut!"

-(On acting)"The reason why I can do what I do and I'm not talking about acting, I'm talking about being away from home for long periods of time is because I have such a ****in' great thing to come back to. If I wasn't as lucky as I am, in respect to the family that I have and how much they are my friends, I would be coked out of my ****in' head in L.A. I'm telling you, I know my ****in' demons. I'd be coked out of my knot every night in L.A. I'd be banging more hookers that you could shake a ****in' stick at. If I didn't have the family that I have, hat's what I'd be doing. I'd be lost, you know? I'd be lost."

-(On marriage with Amelia Warner) (The pair married in July 2001 on the island paradise of French Polynesia.) " I've been in love twice in my life. That was the second time, and it was the true ****in' thing. We met just before Quills came out, and I can tell you the exact moment I fell in love with her. Holy ****, she's beautiful. It was at the premiere, on the red carpet, and I stepped back because it wasn't my night. It was hers. So I step back, and she steps forward, looks at all the light and cameras, then looks back at me with the killer ****in' help-me look on her face. She reached out for me and that was it. Right through the heart. But the marriage was too fast, too young. Ah, love. We wanted a holiday to get married, so we decided to kill two birds with one stone. It didn't work out, it lasted four months and I couldn't give a ****. Through the laughter and the tears I would do it all again in a flash. We loved hard for a year: met each other, fell madly in love; and than fall out of love, as people do."

-"I'm not nearly that tough. In the end, I'm a mama's boy."

-(On the word '****') "It's just cursing, that's all. Everyday Dublin lingo. If you read something I say and it's got all these words in there as it tends to you could think I come across like some ****ing wanker. But if you're talking to me now, you know it's just habit. It's just the way I speak. It's an English and Irish slang. 'Shaddup, ya ****!' You use it with your friends. And it's not exactly referencing what it is. It is not like, 'Shaddup, you vagina!' **** that, doesn't mean 'Sexual intercourse that!' But **** is a great word."

Great draw-up of the profile of Colin!

And i'm going to add a couple more facts

- Colin joined a line dancing troupe that toured Ireland in a minibus. Naturally, the teenagers had to wear stetsons and neckerchiefs.

- Colin comes from a previleged middle-class background and he now commands at least $8 million dollars a film.

- Colin used to model and he was told by the modelling agency that line-dancing was a way of keeping fit and staying in shape.

Hmm maybe because he looks suave there and I do kind of see a young AP in him now that you mention it, especially in the new batch of pics posted at the Pic Thread. One sure thing in common between them is that they both can act.
