Actually, it never was a final victory. Everything started heading south as soon as they went into India, and although Alexander wanted to get all the way to the encircling ocean, he had to turn back before he got there because he took the arrow to the chest. (In actual fact it was because the army decided they couldn't follow him any longer, and the arrow to the lung was suffered when they were already heading back west, but the movie for the sake of drama made it look as though they turned back because of the injury.) His spirit was already subdued when he was forced to turn back, and that, coupled with the disasterous desert trip, meant that he returned to Babylon 'defeated'. Not in a traditional sense of the word, but in his heart. And Hephaistion knew this too.

It's just that 'star-crossed lovers' is a term used to indicate a couple that can't be together because the fates were so against them. In Romeo and Juliet, that applied primarily because of their feuding families. A/H had none of that - they were together for about twenty years and remained the best of friends. There's nothing tragic intrinsic in the relationship.

But I'm rambling. I'm not one for shipper names anyway.

Krissy - I first thought that too, but then I got confused because Alexander just went away into his tent without looking as though he wanted Hephaistion in there; and Hephaistion paused at the threshold, looking confused, before he finally decided to walk away.

I got a new student this week, and he looks exactly like this young Alexander. I told him and he's going to check the movie out when it's on DVD. A student that heard the conversation and has seen the movie agreed with me.
