I started really liking Rory when he told off the Doctor causing people to want to impress him in "Vampires in Venice".

I did like Rory, probably because he noticed things other people didn't - like the coma patients walking around or that fact he got how dangerous the Doctor was. But it took him punching the Doctor to get me to fall in love with him.

There was something about Rory that made him stick out from the others.

Yes he actually notice a lot more around him and he was willing to stand up to the the doctor for Amy and himself .. He had a lot of guts and in the end I feel the doctor respected him for being that way

^ I believe he did too, and the doctor proved it by always trusting Rory to make the right decisions even in the toughest predicaments.

And I really like him when he's being adorkable. (Not that I wouldn't mind him coming and rescuing me while dressed as a Roman soldier. )

Yes! He kept calling him Rory and didn't realise. I loved the bit where the Doctor stood in front of him and said, something like: "Rory, I'm missing something right in front of me." Then he walked out of view, there's a moment, we're all waiting...you hear him drop the guns and he's finally got it!

True, though one difference was Rory did get to the point of respecting the Doctor and not being jealous of him any more...whereas Mickey it was still back and forth.

Actually, I thought after a while the Doctor and Rory's relationship was much closer to the relationships had with some of the men of Classic Who then it ever was similar to the one he had with Mickey.

They definitely had their own friendship separate from Amy and it showed quite a bit in series six and the first part of series seven.

I always thought that the Doctor appreciated that Rory didn't idolize him like Amy did in the beginning. He did say that he liked Rory in a series five deleted scene too.
