You hit the nail on the head! River is really The Doctor's equal (and sometimes even superior). I think that's why she's so divisive within the fandom...particularly because she's a female equal. Characters like The Master and Captain Jack have been created to parallel The Doctor and they are quite adored, but the characteristics that people often cite as reasons to dislike River are always the same ones that people love in male characters like The Master, Jack, and The Doctor himself.

I'm in the middle of a research paper on River for my Feminist Theory and Methodologies course and that's the issue I'm writing on. I'm actually working on the Audience Reception and Use portion of my paper at the moment, so if anyone wants to reply and give their detailed thoughts on River (and it doesn't all have to be positive, I need overall audience reception): why you like her, why you don't like her, how does she affect your viewing of the show, what are the implications of her characterization, etc, etc... I'd be thrilled for any and all kinds of feedback.
