I think it's sad that so many of the episodes from the original season are gone.

the shadow strikes says they were lost because of limited space and the television network not thinking the show would last.

There's wasn't a war, it was mostly just the technology at the time, not allowing for much storage.
But there was also the way that the BBC viewed the show. Ratings were on the slide during Troughtons last series, to the point where the BBC were considering cancelling the show. They only allowed the show to go on one more year, because they had no other show to fill the slot. As it turned out, that "one more year" which introduced the 3rd Doctor, and brought the show into colour and down to earth, was the shot in the arm to the ratings to keep the show on the air. So if the reels that held the episodes went missing, they didn't really care. Episodes weren't shown again back then. If you missed them, there was no way to catch up, other than to buy the novelisations. |

Generally, I suggest starting at the beginning with Hartnell. If that sounds too intimidating, and you want to get a taste of each era before jumping in deeper, then for Hartnell, I would highly recommend The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, which I see listed in that 1st image.
If for no other reason (and there are a few), it's worth watching to see the first departure of a a member of the Tardis team. |
